Environmental science placement abroad

I am a first year environmental science student and I kniw that i want to do placement either in the summer or the year following my second year.I dont mind doing a local placement, that being in the south of england, even just in the UK, however I would much prefer to do one abroad. Places I've been thinking about are East Africa, West Africa, and South America but really id be happy anywhere that I can feel safe as a young black woman. Anyway, my main reason for the post is that I am unsure on how I can go about finding a placement when the time comes that may set me apart from others and may give me a unique stepping stone when it come to my career and finding a job after university.
