How does each year differ in terms of difficulty?

I'm intending to do the MSci Environmental Science with a Year Aborad course at the UEA but I was wondering how different the Master's component will be from the prior three years. I don't want to sign up for the MSci if I know I won't be able to complete the final year Master's. Furthermore, I'm concerned as to how each year of the BSc component will differ in difficulty. How will each year be harder than the prior and harder in what ways?

Hi,

It's great to hear that you are considering studying Environmental Science at university! I cannot confirm how the MSci Environmental Science course at UEA will progress in difficulty each year, so I would recommend getting in touch with their course director or a current student.

Lancaster University also offers a MSci Environmental Science with Study Abroad option that you might want to look into (I have copied the link to the course page here: https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/environmental-science-study-abroad-msci-hons-f851/2024/).
The course will progress in difficulty each year, with the first year mostly being used to get everyone up to the same place. At Lancaster, the BSc and MSci Environmental Science with Study Abroad are both 4 years long and the department (Lancaster Environment Centre) is usually flexible in allowing students to switch between courses, if you decide you no longer want to study the MSci.

I hope this is helpful and good luck with your application!

Hi there,

It's great that you are considering UEA for your MSci in Environmental Science! I'm a PhD student in the School of Biological Science and have demonstrated quite a few times for the course. Firstly, as you are probably aware the course if at the Centre for Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation at UEA. This is one of a kind Centres in the whole Europe: https://www.uea.ac.uk/groups-and-centres/centre-for-ecology-evolution-and-conservation#:~:text=With%20over%2020%20members%20of,the%20School%20of%20Environmental%20Sciences. The quality of research and collaboration is beyond imaginable. The lecturers in the course are really word leaders in Evolution, Ecology, Conservation and Environmental Science - many of they have been mentioned multiple time by the press and they publish in really high impact journals like Nature. Also, external collaborators of the Center include the British Trust for Ornithology, RSPB, the John Innes Centre, ELSA and CEFAS, many of which are chosen by students for their placement. In terms of difficulty, as the course progresses, the modules will become harder, yet your preparation will also be different. By the time you reach your 4th year, you'll be fully prepared to take in the MSc part of the course - there is no doubt about it! Also, the school has in place a advisee system, whereby students have designated times with advisors and lecturers, which they use to go over their CV, career prospectus or even course material. The students seem to really enjoy the course as it has a lot of practical aspects to it and field trips etc.

Best of luck and don't worry - you'll smash it!

Looking forward to welcoming you on campus soon!

Best,
Daniel

Hi @YM2612
That course sounds really exciting!
In terms of the masters, it would likely build on existing content covered in the Bachelor's. The difficulty is therefore likely to gradually increase. Also, with a masters you are likely to be able to differentiate and tailor your courses to your specialisms.
The same for each year really. I found that the difficulty does increase year-on-year in Economics but it does cover and include concepts from previous years.
I did a year abroad as part of my degree, so if you have any questions about that please let me know
