i'm wondering how DSA actually works as i've been told they give you money, give you equipment etc.

You dont get given money as such.
I get DSA mostly for my Bipolar and i get:
-A laptop (i paid the first £200 on it)
-Certain programms on the laptop like read to write and a mind mapping programe.
-a printer/photocopy/scanner so i can print out lecture notes, photocopy books ect.
-£100 each year for paper/ink for the printer (but dont get this up front, i buy the ink and paper, upload the receipt and they send the money
-access to a mentor.
So any "money" you have to pay up front and they pay you back when you provide the receipts
