should i do a law conversion or resit my a levels

doing a law degree through clearing hasn’t worked out for me. i’m not sure whether i pick a different degree through clearing and later do the law conversion (i’ve heard it’s quite stressful and it’s an extra expense) or do i resit a couple of my a levels and try again? i know for sure i want to do law so it’s hard for me to decide

the law conversion is stressful but only because it fits in all the core law modules which are usually spread over 3/4 years into a year. it is an expense if you do it solo but if you receive a training contract beforehand(if you want to be a solicitor), the firm pay it for you. pretty sure with the sqe, you don't have to do the conversion anymore (someone correct me if this is untrue) but some firms still want you to do the conversion course as well. not sure about the barrister route though if thats what you want to do.

since you're going to be spending a good 3 years studying this subject at uni in detail, id pick what im most passionate about. if you really really want to do law, you can retake and apply again but this has its own cons too as some unis don't look at resit candidates as equal to the rest of the candidates. if you are more passionate about a different subject that you can find in clearing at a uni you like, then i'd say go for that option

but youve said you are very sure you want to do law so perhaps do more research into some of the unis that offer law in clearing and/or research unis you are interested in applying to if you did retake and see how they consider retake candidates. keep in mind they'll probably want more from you in terms of grades but ik each uni is different

Do you intend to become a barrister? If you intend to become a solicitor, you just need a degree + SQE.
For roles as a barrister, you need an LLB + bar course or a degree + PGDL + bar course

I wouldn't have thought it was that much more expensive to do a PGDL than a year at uni for an undergrad. See the following for example:
https://www.law.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/law/pgdl/#vsj15432 (£13600, £10950 - depending on location)
https://www.bpp.com/courses/law/postgraduate/pgdl-law-conversion-course (£10700, £13400 - depending on location)
https://www.ntu.ac.uk/course/nottingham-law-school/pr/this-year/postgraduate-diploma-in-law#entry-requirements (£9300)
https://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/courses/graduate-diploma-law-distance-learning-gdl/ (£8950)

https://www.uclan.ac.uk/undergraduate/courses/graduate-diploma-in-law-gdl (£10000)
https://www.bbk.ac.uk/courses/postgraduate/law-graduate-diploma/#fees (£9860)

https://www.city.ac.uk/prospective-students/courses/postgraduate/law-gdip#tabs496066-link641445 (£13590)
https://www.brookes.ac.uk/courses/postgraduate/law-gdl (£9250-£9700)
https://www.qmul.ac.uk/postgraduate/taught/coursefinder/courses/laws-pgdip/ (£6000)
https://www.mmu.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/course/graduate-diploma-in-law-common-professional-examination/ (£10000)
https://www.lsbu.ac.uk/study/course-finder/law-conversion-legal-pgdip-cpe#fees (£10490)
https://www.uea.ac.uk/course/postgraduate/gdipl-graduate-diploma-in-legal-studies#fees_funding (£9300)

You shoudl be able to get funding for the PGDL considering it's a Level 7 on the NVQ, which is higher than the Level 6 for a bachelor's degree, so you won't be subjected to the ELQ policy and fund everything yoruself.

I want to go the barrister route so would definitely have to do the PGDL. When you say 'get funding' does that mean like student finance, as in a debt I would have to pay back? Either way, the cost isn't the number 1 reason deterring me from going that route, it's just an added factor. I think my main issue is trying to pick a degree I want to study in depth for 3 years when I've wanted to go the law route for years and have dedicated so much time in reading and research and work experience. But I will consider this, thank you so much for the reply.

Sorry, I should have been clearer and be more thorugh with my research.
Yes, generally for most funding options it's something you would need to pay back, but there might be some scholarships available. Student Finance wouldn't fund you for your PGDL, but you can get funding through certain lenders apparently. See:

Personal recommendation: if you really can't see yourself doing any other course or go to any other university, then I would recommend the resit assuming the university would be OK with it.
