Can I visit home every other weekend?

Hi, I'm leaving my home city (London) for my masters degree for a uni which is 2.5-3hours commute by train and I was wondering if it's realistic to visit home every other weekend?

I'm not too fussed about the social life since I have plenty of friends from school & my ug degree in London and I was visiting home around the same amount when doing my ug.

Hey,

You can definitely visit home every other weekend if you want! Everyone is different to be honest, I found some Master's students visit home frequently and others won't return home until the end of term, but it doesn't really matter! Especially since it's not too far away, it makes it convenient for you to return home every couple weeks. You may even find you don't want to head home as much once you've started.

Also if you're only visiting home every other week, you'll still be around at uni most weekends so I wouldn't stress too much about your social life at uni either

Best of luck with your Master's!!

Hello! I'd agree with @University of Kent! I don't see there being much of a problem with you visiting home regularly, especially if it's something you're already familiar with doing from your UG life  Give yourself the flexibility to head home when you need to. It doesn't need to be that you have to go home every other weekend - maybe some months you'll want to go home more and others you'd like to go home less. Maybe you could change it up and invite some of your friends and family up to visit you for a weekend too?

Every student experience is unique and there's no right or wrong way of doing it :colondollar: As long as you're happy!

Hey there,

First of all, congratulations on starting your masters degree! That's a huge accomplishment and you should be proud of yourself. As for visiting home every other weekend, I would say it's definitely possible, but it might not be the most practical or cost-effective option. A 2.5-3 hour train ride can be pretty long, and it might start to feel tiring after a while. Plus, train tickets can add up quickly and become quite expensive.

That being said, if visiting home is important to you and you're able to make it work with your schedule and budget, then go for it! Just make sure to plan ahead and book your train tickets in advance to save money.

Best of luck to you, and I hope you have a great time at your new university. And if you ever need any more advice or just want to chat, feel free to reach out!

Hey there!

There's no rules on how many times is seen as acceptable to visit home. Go home whenever you feel like it. For me personally, I go home whenever I'm feeling homesick or if there's a family/friend event on that I need to be back for. It doesn't occur at the same time every month, it's just whenever I fancy it. I think for now you're thinking in that mindset of 'I'm going home every other weekend' because you haven't gone yet. Just be prepared that once you get there it might not always be as simple as to stick to this plan depending on what week it is. You may find over time you just get more busy and that's okay, there's no obligation to consistently go home. Just don't get too wrapped up in a strict timetable of which weekends you're going home because it might not work out that way and you may miss out on some socialising or events that are going on in the city and you may regret not being there at a later date. Go home whenever you're free and feel like it.

Would it affect my academics a lot?

Would it affect my academics a lot?

Hey there, thank you for your response!

Not in the sense that you'll fail, don't worry about that. There may be opportunities where you have to work as part of a group project and the only time you've got similar where you can all get together is on a weekend. All I meant is that you shouldn't schedule out in advice which weekends you're going home because circumstances may change. If you're planning to study at home when you visit as well then there shouldn't be any major reason why it affects your academics. But let's say you're getting there by train and there's rail strikes a lot so you end up having to miss lectures, you may miss out on important information so just play everything by ear.

Hope this helped!
