Aerospace or civil engineering

Hi,
I applied through clearing for aerospace engineering in Brunel University. I got an offer and now I will be studying in Sep 2023. But after receiving the offer I am scared that wether I will be able to do that. Degree being a hard is not a problem here ik that engineering is hard. I am a person who is willing to put the hard work into my degree to get good grades. But I am having second thoughts about my degree and I might wanna switch from aerospace to civil engineering. I will attend the classes in the first week and if I don’t like it I will switch to civil engineering. I want to have opinions on both degree from the students who are currently studying theses degrees at uni. Like what sorts of topics do you guys study in both degree. Looking at the modules on Brunel university website I like civil engineering modules and it also have geography which I also like. I didn’t did chem at a level so will it be a problem for civil engineering.

Problem with me is that I like both planes and tall buildings, so civil and aerospace was the one I considered . I first thought of applying for civil engineering but the people around me said why would you do that civil is not good so I ended up applying for aerospace.
Please let me know ASAP because I am really confused and stressed. My parents says that I don’t have decisions power and that’s really hurt me. Regardless of what degree it is , ik I will work hard and put the effort into it and being an engineer is my dream. A lot of people said that engineering is not for women’s, but I like maths and physics so I will do it.

Hi

Hope this bumps your thread so current students see it and can offer their experience.

Have you spoken to the university about your course concerns and checked that it would be possible to switch if you wanted to?

Good on you for pursuing your dream as an engineer, regardless of what people say. It sounds like you have a very good work ethic and will succeed at whichever route you choose.

You're welcome and good luck. They should be able to help you and explain your options. It might be that there are overlaps between modules or some way that you can experience both routes to get a better idea of if they are right for you. Let us know how you get on

Yh, they said that I can change the course. I have to request and if it’s approved by admission teams then I can, but I want to attend the aerospace engineering classes before deciding. Modules for both engineering are same expect from one module.
Will let you know. ✌🏻

If you want to work as an engineer then civil engineering is a better route than aerospace. Check out the big consultancies - e.g. Arup, WSP, Atkins, AECOM, etc. - and you'll see the different engineering roles they offer (many of which are subdivisions of civil & structural), what it's like working for them, current vacancies etc.

Ok thank you
Hi there,

Picking a degree is hard and you are not the only one to struggle with the decision. I recommend going through each of the courses and picking out which aspects and modules you think you'll enjoy most and weighing them up together.

I strongly recommend talking to the university in person and discussing your options. They may have support, career advisors and more to help discover exactly what is right for you.

I personally do civil engineering and love it so don't be put off by what other people say. It also covers a broad range of subjects so you can decide further into your education what you would like to specialise in.

Good luck with your decision!
