How to get into marine biology

From a young age, I was interested in the activities of a marine biologist. I'm currently in year 13 preparing for my upcoming A-Level exams (maths, biology, and chemistry) but have no idea how to study the subject of marine biology in university. What degree should I apply for? Which universities have good courses? Thanks.

Some places like Newcastle have specific Marine Biology courses, whereas other places may have more general Biological Sciences or Biology courses when you'd specialise in Marine Biology later, like Durham. It all depends on whether you'd want to specialise immediately and if you have preferences for what area of the country you are in, as it seems like places a bit closer to the coast are more likely to have specific Marine Biology courses when I looked for a bit last year

Hey @Seghier 👋

I'd recommend checking out UCAS for where you could study marine biology and which universities offer it as a course option.

At Essex we offer BSc Marine Biology
A Level entry requirements: BBB (including biology)

You need to look at the course structure as it should give you information about placements and travel options. Like on our course there is a big Indonesia trip but also smaller trips for local field work around the estuaries and coastal areas around Essex.

Every marine biology course will be slightly different so look at a few different universities and their structure over the 3 years to see what you like the look of best.

As far as how to study Marine Biology, you will be taught everything you need to know when you get to uni. At Essex, in the first year you also have some overlapping modules with students studying biological sciences, genetics, biochemistry, biomed, etc. The first year is all about getting everyone to the same academic level so with your biology, chemistry and maths at A Level you will have a wealth of knowledge in these subject areas already.

Best wishes
