We’ve asked George, a current Marine Biology student, to share their experience of studying the course at UoC. We hope this helps provide some insight!

“So far, I am finding the degree really interesting and informative. The classes during my first year were a bit more general, but this actually allowed me to fully develop my understanding of the basics of biology and how it all links together.

The degree subject is really niche and as you get into second year the modules become a lot more specialised, which is when you can hone in on what you’re passionate about, and where your interests lie.

Regardless of how general or specialised the modules are during first and second year, they are all really interesting!

Alongside the modules you are given some amazing opportunities - you have a lot of practical’s that allow you to get hands on experience and allow you to develop your lab skills. You also have a field-based module that allows you to learn how to gather data in the field and learn what that involves.

The university feels that it is important to gain some work experience in your second year. So, I have the chance to go to the Philippines for 2 weeks and get hands on experience working with animals and on research that is active and having an impact on protecting the coast line of some of the islands. This feels like a really exciting opportunity – I can’t wait!

So overall, I feel that the Marine Biology course at Chester is really good and they give you a lot of support and opportunities. This includes the chance to get your dive license which is something that the university help fund.”
