Do you really need a lot of stuff to make a bed

Its the first time I am going to make a bed. Apparently its a small double bed in my accom

I was looking through the list they said to bring but it looks expensive a bit and over my budget

- Linen sheet
- Fitter sheet
- Mattress protector-
- Duvet and duvet cover
- Comforter
- Pillow and pillow cases
The accommodation said I can buy a bundle pack of all of this in their accom but its like £250 :frown:

My entire life honestly my bed most of the time was sleeping on the floor. Like a quilt to laid across the floor and a pillow, and a soft blanket.

So just want to ask, is it really necessary I need to buy all this? How do you make your bed personally?

Fitted sheet*

IMO fitted sheet is unnecessary as its purpose is to make the bed softer and you are used to sleeping on the floor. Personally I have bed sheets, a pillow, pillow cases and a comforter, a duvet during winter.

Ok is there a difference between a comforter vs a duvet?

Also is a mattress protector recommendable? I heard some say it is, some say no

£250 package? that's ridiculous.

no mate don't do that. if you want all those things you can buy all them from asda for much less. recommend wilko if it's still operating in your area. however, perhaps similar to you i can do without a duvet or a comforter. haven't owned one in years.

You will need a fitted sheet, duvet, pillow(s) and a duvet cover/pillowcase set. A mattress protector is optional but will give you an extra layer between you and the mattress if it is a bit grubby.

£250 is ridiculous. The small double size is the problem as it isn't a popular size so might be more expensive.

Looking at a website like Argos - I'd recommend you buy a single duvet (approx £12), a pillow set (£7.5), a double fitted sheet (£5-6 (it will be a bit bigger than the bed, but you can tuck the excess in)), and a single duvet cover/pillowcase set (£10.50).

A matress protector would cost another £8-10.

Large supermarkets often have cheap bedding - try Adsa, Sainsburys or Tesco.
As above, I probably own all those items, but that bundle price sounds a right rip off. I'd expect to be able to pay half that some where like Argos/Amazon/Asda.

I’d like to add on @Intrea’s answer, a comforter is thinner and lighter.

Thanks so much! Will definitely check. I am an international student hence why I was so lost in this haha.

They're slightly different things, but you only need one of them (I'd go with duvet, it's easier to wash a duvet cover than a whole comforter).

(Same with linen sheet vs. fitted sheet, if I'm assuming correctly that by "linen sheet" they mean a flat sheet - you only need one of them to cover the mattress, it's up to you which you prefer. If they mean linen sheet as in some kind of extra layer, it's not necessary.)

Probably would recommend a mattress protector, if only because uni accommodation mattresses can sometimes be a bit old and then the extra layer is quite reassuring!

As above, even if you did buy all of that list, you can definitely do much better than £250, so pick the items you want/need and find somewhere more reasonable to buy them.

Ahhh ok I see. I get the sense I dont need all of this then. Yh I had a sense they were ripping me off. I am not from the UK hence I was still hesitant

Yhhhh I was hesitant getting either the duvet or comforter but since I heard about it's something to have in the UK, I didnt really want to be left out in case a friend sees my room haha

£250 is big money! Maybe its because I am an international student idk

Hey! :hi:

Definitely don't do that package, ngl it sounds like they're trying to rip international students off. You can find everything you need at ASDA for example. Plus the patterns at the shops are waaaay better than the boring colour of white, black, or grey the uni is suggesting you buy. There's some great Halloween bedding sets in the shops atm which look fab.

Personally, I would get a pillow (or x2 depending on what you're used to), duvet + duvet cover, fitted sheet, and another thin sheet to go underneath the fitted sheet.

Mattress protector again is optional. Depending on how comfy your bed is a mattress topper could be worth investing in depending what your bed size is (can be a bit pricey depending if its a single, double, etc).

Hey there!

Don't spend £250 on a bedsheet bundle pack, that's extortionate. You can find a solid set of bedsheets for no more than £30. Have a look at places like B&M, Wilkos, Dunelm, Prettylittlething, they'll have all sorts. You absolutely don't need a comforter. I would however recommend getting a mattress topper and a fitted sheet. There's all sorts of germs on university mattresses so you've got to at least cover it, especially a lot of mites. A good mattress topper can also make a rubbish bed a little bit more comfy but you can get a good bed set for less than £250 absolutely. My advice is to buy a double-sized duvet/cover and fitted sheet because in second year you might end up with a double bed and then you'll have to rebuy everything again.

Hope this helped!

Also most supermarkets, Argos etc do Click and Collect for free or cheap so you can order online and just pick up from the store when you arrive - saves having to navigate a supermarket in a whole new country!

One thing I would recommend in addition to this is a mattress protector that goes all the way around the mattress and zips up - Amazon is probably the easiest place to get one. You can then put the mattress topper on, *then* put the mattress protector on top and the topper straps won't come off the mattress as easily. Then put the fitted sheet on top. It also means if the fitted sheet comes undone you're not brushing against bare mattress.
