If I'm a hands-on learner, how do i study for complex subjects in engineering?

So, I wanted to find out what type of learner I was and 9+ websites say I'm a tactile or a visual learner but using mind-maps are in-effective to me and take too long. In University, I'm studying an Engineering course and they generally contain complex modules with a-lot of theory. How do I use what I've learnt about myself to get a better understanding of the material to score those higher marks such as a first class?

I would say create your own experiments if possible or ask for practical applications where you can visualise what is happening in the theoretical work. What engineering discipline is it? This advice may be better suited for disciplinees such as electrical or mechanical

It's Robotics Engineering, so it uses both.
