A foundation year, also referred to as Year 0 is the year before starting an official degree course. You develop the skills and knowledge required for the degree and is mainly for students who did not achieve the entry requirements for the 3 year course or students who may be studying Level 3 qualifications that are not in the same subject field as their intended degree.

Not all universities offer foundation year courses and some may offer overall foundation years such as a STEM foundation year which will allow you to progress onto any STEM degree course as long as you pass the foundation year.
Hey :bird:

As mentioned above a foundation year is a one year course that prepares you for starting your chosen undergraduate degree. A foundation year acts as a stepping stone onto your degree-level studies. Successful completion of the Foundation Year will put you in a strong position to progress onto your chosen degree.

A Foundation Year is a supportive way to get started at university. It is a great option if:
- You do not have the grades for direct entry for your preferred degree course.
- You have studied different subjects at A-level to the course entry requirements.
- You have non-traditional qualifications or experience.
- You are returning to study after a significant period away from education.

Not all universities offer a foundation year however some universities offer a Health Foundation Year that upon successful completion means you can progress onto your chosen healthcare degree. A Foundation Year is a great opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge required to start your chosen degree.

Hi @vavalur

A foundation year takes place before your first year of your degree and gives you the fundamental skills needed to continue onto a degree course and is designed for students who perhaps haven't studied the right subjects for the course they wanted to do or haven't achieved the qualifications required.

At Loughborough our foundation courses are integrated programmes that help you to progress onto the first year of your chosen degree course and our streamed approach to foundation studies allows you to transfer to another course within the stream during the year if you change your mind as to what course you'd like to do. You can find more information about foundation years and the opportunities available at Loughborough here.

I hope this helped and if you have any questions feel free to get in touch

A foundation year, often known as a "preparatory year" or "access course," is an additional academic year at the beginning of a university degree program. It's designed for students who don't meet the standard entry requirements for their desired degree.

During the foundation year, students typically study subjects related to their chosen degree and receive additional support to bridge the gap between their current qualifications and the entry requirements for their target course. Successful completion of the foundation year usually guarantees progression to the first year of the degree program.

Not all universities offer foundation years, but many do. It's essential to research individual universities and their courses to determine if a foundation year option is available for the specific degree you're interested in pursuing.

Good Luck!
