The Student Room Group

My flatmates are always talking to their friends online

I am a Second year student living with 3 friends in a small flat. All 3 of them are constantly playing video games and chatting to each other and their old friends from school on discord. We are 3 boys and one girl. The girl isn't too bad but the boys, especially one of them, can be quite loud sometimes. Whenever they are not out or asleep, they are talking to these people. I don't play the same games as them as they have Gaming PCs and I don't. I also don't have any old friends to talk to from school like they do. What really annoyed me is that one day we made plans to have a game night and 2 of them were still chatting to these people and 1 guy got annoyed with me when I asked him if he was free. They are driving me mad and I've had to resort to ear plugs in bed because they are still up at midnight sometimes. I didn't expect it to be like this when I moved in and do not want to swap with someone else. I feel bad mentioning how I feel as I don't want to make them feel like they can't talk to these people. Like if it was just one of them doing it once or twice a week it wouldn't be so bad but they all are all the time.

Is this pretty normal and is anyone else in a similar situation?

Go out and socialise and make friends of yours. When you live in shared accommodation this is the kind of thing you have to put up with. You can also get a job, save up, and get your own place. In the meantime, enjoy your earplugs and thank whatever deity you believe in for them.

A measure of last resort is to play your music or movies at a very high volume, probably at ungodly hours of the night, until they confront you and complain. Then, you can table your own concerns to them, and most likely, establish some kind of understanding in the house. END OF STORY.
