Human portraits are seen in Modern era with. Animals aren't.

I would expect human. But that doesn't mean it has to be a direct painting of a person/yourself. If you have a concept that intertwines portraiture with animals (eg a relationship between a person and their pet) and that is your interest/skill, it could be incorporated.

Fine art is incredibly broad. If you’re talking about a level/gcse I expect you could make it into anything you wanted to. If you break down what a portrait is it is, most often, a representation of a person. However I don’t see why you can’t do animals if you want to.

The exam board will be looking for a justification and journey to whatever you produce and as long as you have that and it is technically good and creatively exciting you will get good marks.

You could even completey abstract the idea of a portrait. They won’t be expecting everybody to produce representational portraits of people
