Would you say Richmond is quite a social place?

Its between Richmond and Goldney for my first choice

Dunno

Think Ive got a decent chance of getting into goldney cause i can plonk loads of stuff on my statement thats quite good in terms of getting into halls "SU president, NYT, Peer Mentor, Lived in halls already, wants to get involved etc" plus I have like a mild disability so they may give me some credit and priority as it'd be tough for me tolive in SB

but im not sure whether goldneyis just a whim for me - and whether richmond would be more practical as a drama student ill be socialising with my course mostly anyways and ill be doing tons of hours per week so its not like ill be hanging round halls bored.

hmmm

and richmond has a garden too....i know goldney has grounds too... its just i got put off winkworth by the fact it doesnt seem like the nicest place in terms of places to chill - although its a short walk from the college green....is anyone in Richmond? fancy giving a mini review?

xx

Sorry, there is no personal statement this year apparently.
Also... most people good enough to get into Bristol will be peer menors etc...

Have you visited both halls to see which you like best?
Also, I don;t know how Richmond is structured, but Goldney live in groups of small "flats", so this might be a social problem if you find it difficult to meet people who you don't live near to. :s

I would read through this thread, there is bound to be something about richmond here already.

No actually I don't find it difficult to meet people at all...although i don't really understand where you got the impression I would find it hard to socialise with people I don't live with...surely I pointed out that I probably will be socialising mostly with people who I don't necessarily live with? hehe never mind.

I've read through the thread and there isn't much info on Richmond - probably because it's only been re-opened for 07 so hence why I asked, and no I haven't visited either as unfortunately I haven't had a chance to and probably won't before the end of the summer.

I didn't realise there wouldn't be a statement? Surely that's going to make placing people quite difficult. Ah well...

Been thinking about it and I think I'm putting Richmond first anyhoo...I value my independence and I also love the idea of being opposite the SU - it kind of makes up for not having an in-house bar.

You seem to be quite well informed about all this Stolen Stars....thanks for your help

Hey, if you like Richmond then it probably makes a lot of sense to go for it over Goldney, not least because you've got such a better chance of getting a place. As long as you're not settling, but it doesn't sound like you are because there are clear advantages.

Apparently there isn't going to be a statement this year (I know, I'm a bit unsure of how that'll go too), but there will be 'general questions', so you might still get to emphasise your amazingness :p:
Time to scribble stars on the questionaires
I'm in Ricnmond. It's arranged in flats of ~6 people, with 2 flats on each floor. There are 3 seperate buildings, one has the common room and another has the laundry bit.
As of now, nobody is actually allowed in the garden..... We got told on the first day that it belongs to all the other houses in the terrace, but we're not allowed to go in it. So you can hang around the small car park in front of it with all the bins lol. Although it does give a nice view in the summer.
Ok, so, bit of help if anyone has a moment? My criteria are:

- Self catering
- Would very much appriciate my own room
- Not bothered about ensuite
- Would like piano access
- Don't mind a walk
- I think I would prefer flat arrangement above corridors.

Any tips anyone?

durdham. Though it is very quiet.

Is Durdham really as quiet as everybody says? Or is it just relatively quiet, in comparison to the other halls? (I've never been there so I don't know at all)

Thanks for that it helps a lot

Would you say Richmond sociable? Is it useful being opposite the SU? Would you change if you could?

hehe sorry im miss questions...jut cant find much on it.

Durdham really aint as bad as everyone makes out. A touch quieter than some of the other halls maybe but you're not condemning yourself to social leprosy or anything...

It is, particularly by people who live near it, but it's just not used as much as other (usually campus) unis' unions.

Sounds like the SU isn't as raving as some others, but that's just because their towns aren't as raving

(Disclaimer: No idea if that theory is true...)
(Disclaimer's disclaimer: But it's practically immaterial because the point is that Bristol as a whole rocks, not just one building with that job designated to it.)

thats actually the reason i was debating going to manc instead of bristol....their union is the shiz.

Meh I dunno now...I kinda want to be somewhere with grounds...I lived on top of a mountain for most of my life I need to be near greenery.

Thinking Goldney and Manor and praying I get Goldney.
TBH I only went to the union twice during freshers week and first meetings of the societies I joined..... Then again, i'm not that much of a social person anyway and all my friends live in stoke bishop so wouldn't come down to the SU anyway :s-smilie:

Richmond is quite social, everyone knows eachother etc which is nice. There's also been a few parties and organised events.
I wouldn't change.... The whole place is clean and new and just plain nice lol. It's close to the uni and you can easily walk to the city centre, so it's a great location cos you can pretty much get to anywhere easily.

it has its reputation for a reason much like rahs at churchill. Not to say everone in churchil is a rah but a v.high proportion are. The same is trur of durdham and quietness.

Would someone tell me if I'm making a bad assumption. That a lack of SU will mean that there are less focus on societies?

I'm partially worried that it's going to be like London. Most focus is on the clubbing, the city and such rather than student unions and activities. :s-smilie:
What's your experience so far?
From my experience, societies are very active, but don't particularly have much to do with the union (the ones i'm in). There are lots of societies, so don't worry :P
I'm sure lots of people go to the union etc, i'm just not one of them so can't really say what goes on there.
