Bristol University Accommodation Info (please post all questions here!)

whats hiatt baker like...as in the number of people on floors, number that share a bathroom etc. Any downsides to it? the only ones i've heard is that it looks like a dump.

Hiatt Baker = my area of expertise.

There's 6 blocks, A to F, 3 floors to each block. Roughly 20 people per floor.
There's a guy's bathroom and a girl's, and I think in most cases it's an even spread of boys to girls, so 10 to a bathroom. You get 2 toilet cubicles, 2 shower cubicles, and a bath in each bathroom.

A lot of people I know think that's too many to a bathroom, but I seriously disagree. After all, when do 10 people simultaniously need the toilet? I can also add that I've never had to wait to use the shower, ever.

Yes, it's not the most aesthetically pleasing of halls, but actually it's quite green and nice outside, it's really only the kitchens and corridors that are a bit depressing (I think that's part of the student feel though :P). The rooms are decent sizes (about the same size as Wills New quad I think) and it's such a sociable hall. I've really enjoyed my year here :smile:

but I have to move out in 3 weeks! *cries*

when it comes to applying for a hall, can i be asked to be put with a freind. We are both on the same course, and thought the prospect of living next to eachother would be pretty sweet. She thought if we asked specifically on the personal stament thing we might have a chance, i just wonderd if anyone has had a similar experience and come out succesfull? Ive known her for about a year, but i gues id put down we were child hood freinds :P

sure you wanna do that? you'll see them enough being on the same course. might be a bit much considering you wont want anything to stop you making mates when you get there.

Another thing to consider is, would you like it if you were living with two people that were already buddies from home before you even get to meet them? I'd find it a bit intimidating. Would be nice to think theres a level playing field

well, i have known her for only a year, and like, i see her only a few times a year since she lives on the other side of London, i know what u mean if it was a freind who i see every day, but i dont, so im prety sure .

seconded, I've been in halls before and n the first day about three people in my fllat of 12 already knew eachother (it was technically 2 flats of six but we broke the fire door...oops) but anyhoo... it was unbelievably intimidating.

Think of the upsides though - if you both stay at different halls or even different corridors you can both schmooze with different sets and therefore be able to socialise even more....plus being friends with someone and living with them don't necessarily go together. And all the halls are pretty close to one another anyhoo - well the ones in SB are close to the ones in SB and the ones in clifton are close to others in clifton....so if you really do get friend pangs at odd hours they'll be a short walk away.

that sounded slightly odd but you get my point.

I agree with the others, it could really be a hindrance to meeting other people. You also run the risk of resenting the other person if you find that your friendship with them hampers your ability to meet others. As said if you're on the same course there'll be no issue with seeing one another.

I'm possibly (probably) being really thick here, but do we actually have to do a personal statement kind of thing for accommodation this year? I've seen no mention of it in the information they sent... thanks for any info :s-smilie:

thanks for facebook advice - i had no idea that there were such groups, of HoR of Bristol Uni
woodland court seems to be nice, according to people's discussions who have been there already - it is quite nice place, and the picture is very pretty

Are their any websites or pictures of the rooms inside woodland court, id love to see what their like, same with Goldney, but cant seem to find many, im thinking back to a room i saw in october which had a mahogany type fireplace i think, large and wood floor. I thought it was Goldney, maybe not.

hey, I'm a current Stoke Bishop resident and seriously advise people NOT to be put off by the walk! It only takes 40ish minutes to the main uni building for me and it gives you time to chat to friends and such from SB who you might not see much otherwise due to being on different courses/having different deadlines etc

I'll be very sad to leave these halls in a few weeks :frown:

Anyway, just ask if anyone has any question about the halls (I've been in all of them! Live in University hall even though I didnt chose it, still love it :smile:
