Salut

Does anybody know if it is compulsory in France to carry ID cards, like it might be in England in a few years time?

(I need to know for my A2 French oral topic "l'état et l'individu")

This would be a huuuuuuuuuge help - merci à l'avance.

I hugely doubt that: Guardian I don't think they do no. But obviously only going off this article!
Thanks a million! Article only says they have voluntary cards, which is maybe what i was thinking of...

Thankyou!!!!!
It is compulsory but nobody really follow the rules in France.

True. I think it's compulsory too.
If you walk about a big city late at night in France, you can sometimes be greeted by policemen saying "Hop hop hop. Police Nationale!

Vos papiers s'il-vous-plait!" meaning you need to get your ID card, your Permis De Séjour...
I am French so I'm pretty sure it's compulsory.

Sounds like a case for an "en principe"...

En France actuellement tout Français doit, en principe, porter sur lui sa carte d'identité... pour qu'il puisse, à tout moment, prouver.... etc...

That way, you cover the letter of the law and the possibility that some of the French may regularly not carrry their ID.

What you can't get away with in France is driving without your correct papers, btw!

Ah brilliant people thankyou so much!!! I'll follow the 'en principe' idea - thanks!
