I do sociology. What's it like is a bit of a vague question, but all in all I've been having a good time with it. It really does depend on what modules you pick cuz if you enjoy them like I do mine, it really is a good course. Have you considered modules yet?

If I may ask, what modules did you pick? I'm 99% certain I'm going for the research methods specialism at the moment...

Uhm I'm not sure what the required modules are for the research methods specialism, but keep in mind that they don't require you too choose a specialism until your 2nd year. But I would check because some specialisms have requirements in your first year. Anyway, I took:

Sociological Imagination and Investigation (required for all 1st years)
Media Sociology
Modernity and Globalization

and I took an outside option in The World Economy: History and Theory.

So if you have any questions about those, I can probably answer them. And a close friend has taken Social Welfare in Britain so I'll probably be able to forward you answers for that if you have questions on that module

 oooo do you have any tips for the naive fresher?

I thiiiiiiiiiink I'm going to take:
Sociological Imagination and Investigation (obviously!)
Social Welfare in Britain
State, Society and Work

(and hopefully if they'll let me) I'll take Learning Japanese 2 as the fourth optional one...

I'm a bit worried about how the available modules change so much every year!!!

Uhhm tips? Firstly I'd say don't bother with reading lists if you actually get them hahaha. And secondly if you want to take a language course so that it counts towards your degree, then get in line fast as LOADS of people line up for those (that's in the Humanities building). And also I'm not sure about State, Society and Work.. but it wasn't offered this year, you should check the website's last updated date on the bottom right corner of the page to make sure it's up to date .

And join the Sociology Society at the SU website!

I actually didn't take A-levels but I took the equivalent in the American system, but I'll tell you what I got anyway:

European History - A
Macroeconomics - A
Japanese - A
Spanish - B
Studio Art - B

The general requirements I believe are BBB or BBC, but due to my luck I got an ABBB, with an A in Macroeconomics. Atleast it worked out for me I suppose  Good luck!

Might be nice to have an idea of what you want to do, but there's a lecture in your first week where all lecturers of all first year modules talk to you about what the modules will be like, so it's all good!
God, I missed my grades for this course. I had to have 9/10 overall in the Romanian Baccalaureate including 9/10 in Math.
I got 9.63/10 overall, but missed math at 8.55/10. Do you guys think I still have a chance? The math exam was absolutely awful, I mean really hard, and in all the country the grades are really low. I don't know what to do next...

I'm also thinking that math is not that relevant for this course, especially that in Romania we have a reaaaaally complicated calculus+algebra curriculum..

Phone them up and ask! Although they might not be able to give you a definite answer until A Level results come out in August and they know how oversubscribed the course is.... Good luck

Maths can be relevant to sociology if you are interested in Social research, Statistics and Quantitative research, but the statistics modules are optional!
I'm not quite sure what I'll be interested in, but I know I want this course, lol. I think I'll just call them tomorrow then.. I'll keep you posted

I'm at Warwick studying Sociology at the moment too (just finished 1st year) - thought I'd drop in and say hi

Those of you thinking about taking Social Welfare in Britain, I'd advise against it, or at least take it in 2nd year rather than 1st. I didn't take it myself but friends who did found it difficult and pretty hard work.

I took Gender Class and Empire, Media Sociology and International Perspectives on Gender, so if anyone has any questions about any of those I'm happy to help.

So does that mean that I don't have to choose them now on that online module registration thing? It's really confusing. I've decided which modules i'd wanna take, but how do you know if they'd clash?
