Derby is a bustling city about 30 minutes from Nottingham, an hour from Birmingham and less than two hours from London. There are people from all over the world living in Derby - it's small, safe and friendly with a thriving multi-cultural community.
Buxton is a small picturesque town on the edge of the Peak District National Park. It's about an hour from Derby and Manchester and less than three hours from London. Buxton is much quieter than Derby, with miles of beautiful countryside nearby - it's a really safe and friendly place to be.

Undergraduate introductory text

Why Derby?

- You can study a undergraduate degree, postgraduate degree - MSc, MA, PG Cert or PG Dip - or a research degree, such as an MPhil or doctorate.

- You can study full time, part time or online - we're really flexible and supportive, so you can fit your course around your life.

- We offer more than 20 online courses, so you can study at a time and place to suit you.

- We've been rated in the top 10% of universities for management and quality procedures by Government quality inspectors, so you can be sure that you will be studying a high quality, relevant and up to date course.

- We'll help you to get where you want to be. All our postgraduate courses are vocationally focused and regularly updated to make sure that you learn the latest industry thinking.

- We never undertake research just for its own sake. Our research directly supports businesses and organisations in solving real world challenges, and plays a major role in informing and enriching what we teach to our students.

- Our academics are scholars engaged with real world issues. They've worked in their subjects, have extensive industry experience, and continue to investigate and discover more about their subjects to keep their teaching fresh and provide real solutions to business.

- We'll help and support you all the way. From your initial enquiry right through to your graduation, we'll give you the advice, guidance and direction you need to reach your full potential.

- "Derby is the UK's second city for job creation, has 11.8% of the workforce in high-technology (four times the national average) and has the highest salaries of any city outside London." John Forkin, Director of Marketing Derby, December 2009.

- Many of our courses are accredited by professional bodies, so you'll learn the knowledge and skills employers are looking for and achieve a recognised qualification.

Postgraduate introductory text

In our last assessment, Government inspectors ranked over half of our research as of 'international excellence', and some even as 'world class'. As a postgraduate research student you will probably become a member of one of our research centres or groups.

We offer two routes to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD):

- Traditional Route MPhil/PhD
- New Route PhD

Choose the Traditional Route MPhil/PhD if you have already gained research skills by doing a relevant masters degree. If you have recently finished your undergraduate degree and want to move straight on to a research degree, choose the New Route PhD.

Fees and costs

The principles behind our fees
We don't want our fees to have any surprises, for students or their parents. The fees you see reflect the fact that we want to be open and transparent with you about all aspects of your student life at Derby. We believe fees should be simple to understand and fair. The fees you see at Derby reflect the real costs of providing a high quality student experience. For classroom based courses, these costs are less than for those courses that need a lot of resources or specialist facilities and that's why we've made a distinction.
Our fees
• Standard: £6,995 per year
• Resource intensive: £7,495 per year
• Specialist: £7,995 per year
• Premium: £9,000 per year
All of these fees are likely to be subject to annual inflationary increases.
Our average fee will therefore be approximately £7,400 pa.

For postgraduate course costs

The tuition fees you’ll pay depend on the course you choose and how you study, so visit our website and (search for your course) for details of the fees.

If you studied your undergraduate degree with us, you may be entitled to a 10% discount off the cost of your postgraduate qualification.
