The only issue would be the car really (and maybe food for if you are catered), because there are limited parking spaces available and usually you have to get a permit at the start of the year for them. As for people staying over in general, no-one gives a crap. For self-catered especially, how are they ever even going to know you have someone there?

I will be catered but it's fine he'd probably take me out for food anyway or I'd get the visitor passes or whatever they are. Thanks

I would definitely say badock or hiatt baker if you like going out, have only heard bad things about churchills social life. Hiatt baker has building work going on which I've heard is quite annoying, though they have bigger floors which I think is good.

I was at Badock last year, and will be again this year, I had to suspend my year for health reasons. :frown:

Hi everyone!
I'm really stuck on choosing between Badock, Clifton Hill House and Churchill.
I definitely want catered so that's fine. I would like the most social with the least rah's and I'm just getting more and more confused every time I read anything ha!
I think Badock would be my first choice but it's just sooo pricey however if that's the most social I will probably end up going for that. I'm more of a house party kind of girl though...
Any help would be great

After visiting Bristol, I've decided I would like to be in Clifton, so Goldney will be my first choice. Any advice for second choices? There doesn't seem to be that much choice. CHH seems very boring from the pictures/videos, is that true? I'd hate to be stuck with boring people. And I'd like at least a basin, which there don't seem to be many of there.

Otherwise, there's Manor, but that's the ugliest interior I've ever seen. Are there any better pictures/details about the renovation?

I would say badock, mainly because of the building work, just heard from friends that its really annoying and wakes you up pretty early if your in a room facing it. Also Badock is a lot newer/nicer, a friend in hiatt bakers room just smells damp/mouldy and badocks bar is defintley better!

Floors at badock have i think between 10 and 12, and yeah bottom two floors of each unit are single sex, I was in a single sex floor, I don't think it really makes much difference we just mixed with the floor above a lot.

Just a quick question. How do people form Stokes Bishop tend to get to the city? By bus, or walking? I'm worried that I'd be too lazy to walk that far, and end up doing far less than I'd like to.

So the distance isn't really worth considering too much in your decision?

Well it is a little annoying to be so far away, he queue for the bus in the morning can get very long, I normally aimed to get to the bus stop for 8:25ish  for a 9 oclcok start. But I definitely still prefer stoke bishop.
Guys someone help me Badock or Goldney for first choice? And what the hell do I put second?

I'm preferably wanting self-catered but not to bothered, I'm more bothered about having an en-suite and somewhere friendly. (I do think the rah problem is overstated on here sometimes but by the sounds of it Wills + Churchill does not sound like my thing). I'm from London and I couldn't imagine coming home every weekend, in fact, university is my escape from home!

I'm looking for a party place but friendly and nice atmosphere. I'm thinking Badock but it's only got 10 en-suites or something whereas goldney has 15?! (estimates as I can't remember)... and I'm also totally lost as to second choice.

Help:frown:

I was at Wills before I was too ill and had to suspend. It really is that 'rah' - there was someone with a bit of a london accent and people asked him if he was from the working class :/ , but there are some down to earth people (they are the exception though ) However, Churchill apparently had equal amounts of 'rah' people and some floors on Badock had a bad rep for 'rahness' too

. I don't know whether to advise you listen to the guys about putting it off, it really depends on what you are like and what you like. Things I found hard were about 8/11 girls I was living with had friends at Bristol already from their prestigious school connections... I kind of thought uni was for meeting new people  3/11 even had their best friend from school IN WILLS. The environment could feel claustrophobic at times. I also just found people to be quite cold in general (especially after they stopped putting their freshers personalities on) compared to people in general.

I think the thing to say at Wills, is comparing it to when I visited friends in their halls the year before/ visited durdham, it doesn't feel like you're at uni - it feels like you're at a strict boarding school. Julie will shout at you REALLY LOUDLY, if she catches you taking food out the dining room (I didn't know it wasn't allowed ). Which is fine, if youre used to boarding school, or an old fashioned grammar... I just didn't like it. Also the senior resident pastoral system is a bit OTT, but then I think all places have senior residents (but in like hillside/woodside sounds like they didn't really get involved).

However, I was really unlucky/ must have had a bad about me section, as the warden is an absolute genius at putting people together who get along... which is why it feels kind of isolating when you're one of the rare cases he got wrong.

Although it's 'rah' in general, there were definitely exceptions. One block had more 'lads' then 'rahs' and apparently new quad is less 'rah'. However, Wills has the nicest rooms, if you get old quad they are so pretty and huge. They are also the only hall with formals every week where you get to wear a silly gown, and the food is usually so nice! It also does kind of feel like you're on the set of Harry Potter :P Someone in Clifton Hill House said it feels like your on the set for pride and prejudice (it's also pretty). Also, if you want to bring your car to bristol, it has a decent sized student car park and I don't think there were too many applicants to bring cars this year, so everyone who wanted to got to as far as I know (I have never seen so many minis together before though).

Last thing, a lot of people who came from london, usually 'rahs', went home practically every weekend, so weekends are quite quiet at Wills. What I will say is most people LOVED living at Wills - I'm an exception rather than the rule. Hope this helps

After your experience, did you enjoy Bristol as a University generally?

Does having catered completely rule out ever cooking myself? Like are there no kitchens whatsoever? Say I wanted to make an omelet in the weekend, that wouldn't be an option?

Depends which hall your in, hiatt baker have some crappy ovens with a hob on top that you could make an omelette on, badock doesn't, and I'm not sure about other halls.

Well actually you have to figure out what to do for lunch, by yourself. Catered meals only include breakfast and dinner. So there are small, basic kitchens in the halls (at least there are supposed to be).

Yes I did  I went to some brilliant lectures  and well I'm still with my boyfriend (who I met in Wills). Bristol is such a pretty, packed full of stuff city and I think the uni is really great, one of my open units was in the Wills Memorial Building, which was an amazing experience and all the facilities seem really good. The little socialising I did out of halls was all good fun. I really want to give it another go in autumn with you guys  The only thing I will say is, don't underestimate the hills if you come from a flat place!

Where will you be living this year ? I'm looking at badock/Goldney but can't choose which for first choice! I was thinking Wills but ive read a lot about the atmosphere not being the best.

I'm not a student or anything, but when I went to the open day I spoke to a girl at Hiatt Baker who said she really wished someone had properly warned/explained the extent of the building work. The past academic year has reportedly been extremely noisy, some rooms having work taking place right outside their windows, study has been disrupted and I read an article in the paper (I think it was maybe the University newsletter/newspaper thing?) about a campaign for some refund in fees for HB residents due to all the disruption.

That was definitely enough to put me off it as work won't be completed until the year beginning September '14. :/ I am stuck between the other two myself, along with Clifton.
