mean things you were told when you decided you wanted to go to uni

I actually wanted to go to Cambridge all my life, in Year 11 my science teachers tried to stop me from taking triple science - saying I'd fail. After fighting with another student our head teacher said I'd grow up to be "nothing" and I'd end up working at Mcdonalds. Shout out to him, I'm starting my first day at maccies tomorrow.

Me: "I want to do medicine"

Careers adviser: "Why not go for something like nursing, more within your reach..."

Where I'm at: I got into medicine (unconditional offer), I finish med school in three weeks (eek!)...In your face careers "adviser"

What I say: prove everyone who's ever doubted you wrong. The feeling of success is even sweeter when you do!

Careers advisors are fraudsters.

" You'd never be accepted at a uni in England and even if you're accepted, you will not go as you're parents won't afford it"

Well that criticism made me work hard in As and till now, I really want to prove them wrong by getting a scholarship!

I was told by an Aberdeen Uni rep I had absolutely zero chance of getting an offer from them for medicine.

Just firmed my Medicine offer from them a few weeks ago.

Congratulations! That's great!
Awesome! So pleased to hear this! Good job  Motivates me to go for it even more!

My maths teacher at boarding school, year 13

"You better go find a job because you're not going to university. "

If I have kids I don't think I could send them to private school, he's singlehandedly tainted my view on them

Aww that's awful! I go to a private school and they're very supportive, hope you don't let this one guy affect you!
My father laughed in my face when I told him at that I wanted to become a doctor and specialise in ophthalmology.

I remember it so clearly.

I had given it alot of thought and had made up my mind.

I came home that day and during dinner I decided to share my decision with my family, feeling super excited and proud, that I had finally found something I wanted to do.

My father replied: "You? A doctor? Huh, yea you can always try *in a very condescending tone of voice*"

I was devastated. My self confidence and self esteem were shattered.

My "friend" also told me: "You? A doctor? But you're not a people person".

At that time I broke down internally. I wasn't strong enough to brush it off.
I was young and insecure and let the opinions of people who I thought cared about me, affect me.

Now, I'm done with my 5 year degree in Pharmacy in 2 years, and will pursue Medicine straight out of Pharmacy. I've gained the confidence and willpower to not let people like that get in the way of my life. Here's to achieving goals no matter what!

AAA in Edexcel Biology, Edexcel Chemistry and Edexcel Maths.

You can do it believe me. When i was in this position last year, I doubted that I will be getting the grades because at that time, I did biology unit 1 in January and got a B but I said, I will work so hard and do my best so I won't regret anything after results day. When I saw that I got AAA, It was the most pleasant surprise so I really wanted to continue working hard to achieve my goal which I knew I was getting closer to so just WORK HARD, be deteremined and don't have doubts just believe and know that you'll get what you want and don't think about what will happen if you don't achieve it!!

It really did affect me unfortunately because it was one of my HL subjects and it just killed my confidence, but I'm glad to be starting university this year

I've had the chance to go to a mix of state and private schools and state schools just take the cake for me
"oh you want to do medicine? dont you think you're more suited to the arts? i mean, science isnt REALLY your thing yeah?"
um, no. Just because i dropped physics and kinda suck at chem sometimes doesnt make me inept as a doctor. im top of my class in biology and just because i didnt get 9A*s for my IGs doesnt mean i wont get 4As for my AS levels and even if i dont, i can STILL get into a decent med school no thanks to you and your snide comments.
I went to a UCAS Convention and approached the University of Manchester stand and asked for a leaflet, the guy stared me up and down and told me "you do realise the grades required for Physics here?" and asked me my grades. When I told him my grades he laughed at me. Now I have a reduced offer from there. Would love to slap the prick round the face now and watch his face.

You got a reduced offer? A girl from my school had her interview there a month ago and was so sure that her offer would be reduced as the interview was great. Then she got an A*A*A offer and lost hope in life.

That's a shame :frown: Did she have solid AS Grades though, mine weren't fantastic but my physics teacher did go rogue which they were informed about by our head of sixth?

I know the feeling mate, I've firmed Newcastle for medicine. I'm predicted A*AA (Geog, Chem, bio) and I'm confident about Geog and Chem (100% and 93% respectively at AS) however, I got a B in biology. I got A's in the exams but a U in the ISA and I've got a U this year in my ISA's in biology. I just don't do well in biology ISA's haha :/ So if you don't get in (fingers crossed you do) you'll do pharmacology and then GEM?

That sucks :frown: Tbf ISAs are an absolute pain in the arse with how picky they are in the marking. Congrats on getting offers though - hopefully you'll be able to pull it off and get in!
And yeah, I guess that's the plan - really not liking the sound of it though compared to Plan A haha (don't get me wrong the course sounds interesting, it's just another 3 years and I've heard horror stories about how competitive GEM is).

She got AAAB. But she's given up on getting an A* in physics already. I think she wants an A

I got an offer from Manchester too although it was for engineering so it was only AAB. I can't imagine aiming for A*A*A in my A2s lol.

The most comments I have received from people doing Bsc degrees are "Really? A BA? You may as well not go to uni if you're going to do one of those, pick a real degree like Maths/Science/Buisness etc."

A collective KYS to all these people.

Lol at people who put business in some sort of reputable category, its as soft as they come, not respected at all
I said that I wanted to study languages and was told, by a careers teacher, that it was "unlikely" that I would get into any university to study any subject, "even" languages. Three years on and I am studying French at Oxford and wondering how she has managed to stay in that job.

Yeah that's mad, way too high lmao, I struggled to get C's at AS but have put a hell of a lot more work in this year and am hoping for A's and B's. It's all doable  Have you firmed manchester or is it your second choice, if you don't mind me asking?

Firmed. I think like 5 people from my sixth form firmed it
