Confused about uni identity and finance

I'd be grateful if somebody could answer my questions please:
I've saved enough money for the first year of uni, I won't need a loan for that, so can I apply for student finance some time before I start my second year?
Also what proof of identity do you need to give to uni's before you start the course? because my passports outdated

Yes. Undergrads have to reapply for SF each year, so you can apply with everyone else in early 2017 for the academic year which begins September 17. It won't matter that you'll be in your second year.

Birth certificate is the alternative. You'll need either a passport or birth certificate for your SF application. If you're not happy about sending off your birth certificate it might be worth getting a new passport before next year anyway.
