I said resistant bacteria could be a consequence of an increase in homelessness LOL  (in my defence I had read it in an article but one of my interviewers looked very unimpressed whilst the other laughed so I tried to redeem myself with "Oh yes, well that's a bit of a long shot..." CRINGE  !)

When describing cystic fibrosis (is that how you spell it), I said "One method used to temporarily alleviate symptoms is where a specialised physician pats the CF patient on the back to loosed the mucus in the trachea, so the patient can then cough it up."

"So, you really think you need a specialised physician for this?"

He was smiliing, so I cracked out "Well, maybe someone untrained could pat too hard or too soft" and we had a good laugh at my mistake.

Sigh.. I stuffed up my interview so badly! Lolz it was for Law at downing.. but I hope that they look at other things too :frown: Poo

Don't think too much about it - In quite a few cases a bad interview is actually a good thing because they have pushed you to your limit (and they think you are capable enough of being pushed to your limit). Good luck  !
Camford
Could have. If you were in the cold tv room on the 8th. I couldn't remember very much of the dining hall. In fact I can't remember anything apart from the fact there're only 3 places for Comp Sci. If I had known that, I would have applied to do Maths instead. Damn!

Hi Camford, I meant "talked" as in on here not in person. I never managed to find the TV room, cold or not, i went to the pub instead:smile:

Rosie
Lolz.. for my general interview for Law... they asked me to intepret this statute thingy from 2 different points of view and make a judgement. I hadn't a clue how to do it.. so I needed prompting. After that, I asked "Could I consult parliament?" and they asked me "What for?" and I said... urmm "to ask them if they would like to amend it, or ask them what they meant".. BIG MISTAKE. They leapt onto my statement "what they meant" and I had a lot of explaining to do. After it all, I said "I'm sorry, I think I've made an error in my thinking and I believe that it would be unwise to 'ask them what they meant' and maybe an amendment would have been a better option"..... Oh lordy. That was so terrible. I was flushed and nearly dead.

was it just me... or was edwardson really grumpy and disinterested while gillard was more outgoing and cheery!?

Maybe he was just having a bad day with you. He seemed really nice to me (and apparently to the other interviewee that day as well). Gillard was friendly, and gosh did he ever have a nice office!
There are about three mechanisms by which antibiotics attacks a bacterial cell. In the case of penicillin, it prevents the formation of connections in the cell membrane, leaving the cell vulnerable to external attack. Other mechanisms involve destroying DNA and preventing transcription. The most common counterattack mechanism (the cause of antibiotic resistance) is a thickening of the cell membrane making it impermeable to antibiotics or a pump to expel the antiobiotic from within the cell.

*ahem* - when identifying the different components of a blood slide, I though platelets were initially malaria - double cringe  ! They laughed at me though (and laughed again when I disclosed in passing - it wasn't even relevant - that there are around 25 million million RBCs in circulation  )

Yep! And I told him "all I've ever read about Huntington's Disease is about the man who first discovered and documented the disease itself. That was a short column in a magazine [actually, the studentBMJ], and it didn't describe the disease itself."

He then said it was ok, and briefly explained to me what the disease was.

Oh, if it makes you feel any better, out of the four other overseas applicants to Christ's medicine that I met, only one (other than me) got asked about Euthanasia. Even still, Dr. Gillard might have just forgotten to ask it to the other three.

I was so pissed off after the shit I was asked in my interviews. I knew so much biology, but for some reason I was only asked on my weakest areas. I was asked how to do a microarray, about southen blotting, hybrid DNA strands, links between genetics and intelligence, differing action between steroids and hormones, how many genes are on Y, will Y ever become extinct, how chromosomes pair in prophase 1, communication between cells, how female hormones play an important role in regulation of sperm cell development in the male, and a bunch of other stuff....

Well, I'm afraid I can't beat that one  But what really matter is whether you were at ease with the whole thing. If you could laugh it off, it shows you're not afraid to make mistakes so it's a good thing still.
