Applied maths is anything from high energy physics (quantum field theory, string theory) to gravitation (relativity) to fluid mechanics to asymptotics to quantum information theory to cosmology to astrophysics to acoustics.

Applied maths has an obvious immediare appplication to the real world. Pure maths means you might have to dsig a bit deeper before finding an application.

Of course a hardcore pure mathmo would spin in his grave should anyone find a usage for his (or her ) theorems. At least Hardy thought so!

"Applied Mathematics" could be even more wide-ranging than AlphaNumeric suggests and such a course might include:-

cryptography, information theory and data processing, mathematical biology, financial mathematics, mathematical genetics, combinatorial optimisation, pattern recognition...

plus much of statistics and applied probability might come under that heading.

Indeed, good ol' Hardy. Pure mathematicians just love setting each other riddles to see which of them is the smartest - don't you just love it? I know I do.
