social life at lse

i got an offer from lse two weeks ago but have heard many negative things about the student life at lse. i.e the social life is dreadful. i was just wondering if there are any black people at lse and if the university has an acs. as i am black myself this is something i want to get involved in. of course this does not mean that i will not socialise with people outside of my ethnicity.
also is there opportunity to socialise with students from other uol universities e.g ucl through joint events etc?
please help me as this will form a large part of my decision to firm lse or not.

I'm in a similar situation myself, I got an offer, but what I hear about the social life is the main factor holding me back from a decision. I can't really add much, though I have heard that socialisation with other unis isn't great, and that LSE itself can be very clique-y

I have an offer from ucl aswel and I
Am torn between the two as I have heard better things about the social life at ucl than I have of lse. The only thing that lse really has going for it in my eyes is its prestige. Of course ucl is a fantastic university aswell but lse does have the edge.
But It is a slight comfort that I
Am not the only one worrying about this.
Will you be at the visit day on the 3rd of April?

Yeah. I don't think the social life is amazing at either compared with unis in other cities, though UCL would certainly be better. For me, it's really Bristol v LSE, and for much the same reason as yourself, LSE has the prestige, whereas Bristol appears like it simply be a little more enjoyable.
I will indeed, yes, in the afternoon session for Social Policy. What did you get your offer for, and which session are you in?

To be honest social life is what you make of it. London's in such an amazing area that you won't be short of clubs to go to and you'll definitely find like minded people like you at LSE who want to go out. Sure it's a bit more hardcore in terms of workload than other unis and more people may be focused on getting good grades, but there are still plenty of people that will want to go out so I wouldn't worry about that since LSE is a great uni. Also there are black people at LSE, not too sure about the society, but I'm sure there's something similar

The uni has an ACS and yes there are black people obviously

And tbh if you dont think you can have a good time at LSE, then why would that necessary change elsewhere? social life depends on the individual!

Very true! I have a really great social life at LSE - it's really easy to meet people and make friends during freshers week. Sometimes people over-exaggerate about how LSE hardly has a social scene but I can safely say that is NOT the case. If you want a seriously typical student experience, join the AU. AU nights are every Wednesday and there are tons of themed socials through the AU and the various teams all year long. Societies also have their own socials, and it is very easy to make friends through living in halls. If you want to mingle with people from other UoL colleges, why not try an intercollegiate hall for accommodation? Or, if you want to live in LSE halls, you can check out ULU on Fridays - £1.50 per drink! Even if you don't drink, you can still go and have fun. LSE is like any other university. The opportunities to make a great social life are given to you, you just have to take advantage of them all!

Good luck with your decision and I hope to see you here next fall!

Do you have to be particularly good at a sport to join the AU?

Nope, not at all! More popular sports like football and rugby have several teams, so it does not matter how well you play, you will be welcomed. I was a newcomer to rowing when I joined the team - the captains and coaches were extremely helpful and I learned at a lot! Every team caters to every skill level, so you have nothing to lose and you might as well give it a go! That being said, I think you should join Rowing, aka the BEST AU team ever :colone: (nothing like some shameless recruitment ).

Haha fair enough, no worries  Yes we do have a gym, but apparently it's not very good :s-smilie:. Therefore, students tend to find gyms near their residence halls and use those. For example, Oasis Sports Centre is right next to High Holborn so people from my hall tend to go there. There's also the ULU gym which UoL students are able to use, so if you're in the Bloomsbury area that is also an option

did you ever firm lse? And if so, how did you find the social/night life?
The way I see it, it really doesn't matter which University you go to. If you're in London then you are in the biggest city in Europe and a place which is, on average, younger than the rest of the UK.

If you went to, say, Warwick or Durham and found the University-centric social life was lacking then I'd have sympathy for you. If your SU is crap at a London uni and you fail to carve out a social life for yourself in one of the most vibrant, populous and energetic cities in the Western hemisphere then you are going to be in for a very tough time in life.
