University of Reading Primary PGCE 2012/13

This is a bit of a long shot but I'm starting a Primary PGCE at Reading University in September 2012 and I was just wondering if there is anybody else doing the same (or even a Secondary one) and if so what accommodation you are choosing?

The education department has moved to the London Road campus now so there is more choice in regard to halls (for better or worse!)

Thanks

Hey Sarah-Jayne, thanks for your reply!

I did think about private accommodation but I don't really know how I'd go about finding a place or people to live with (you're only the second person I've found doing primary PGCE here). Plus as I'm finishing a degree this Summer I don't have lots of time to look around and sort it all out. Hence why I am leaning towards halls! Plus it's only for a year, includes bills and is probably safer. Also I rang up the accommodation service and apparently they group postgrads together in halls anyway.

Currently I'm looking at a couple of halls nearest to the London Road campus but they all seem relatively central so have got a few options. I will have to have a sit down and make a comparison list to find the best one in terms of price etc!

Congratulations on getting a place! I have a primary pgce interview coming up soon. What kind of books did people choose for their presentation? concerning the individual interview, did they ask general questions or were they based on your personal statement? any information or advice would be much appreciated! thank you

Hi Vasandar,

In terms of book I'd recommend choosing one that you personally really enjoy and think is valuable to primary level teaching. There was a huge range on our interview day but I think they care alot more about what you say about it then what book you choose. The interview itself was done by 2 people, one a university tutor and another a headteacher/deputy from a school etc. They do ask you alot about your experience so be ready to talk about that! Hope that helps and good luck

Hello!

I am starting the primary PGCE specialising with french course at Reading in September too and I noticed this thread about accommodation.

Last weekend I went and had a look around a private accommodation called Kendrick Hall. It is literally next to London Road campus (I saw the building I was interviewed in from the entrance) and it is new this year.

As it is private, the majority of the students there are generally post grads and you can request to share the 'flat' with only postgrads if you want. So I am hoping it will be relatively quiet as I don't want to be swamped with Freshers this year!

It is also a closer walk to the station and town centre than the university halls.

It looks lovely, so I have booked a room there. If people are interested in private halls and being close to the uni, I would recommend checking it out

Good luck in your interviews Vasandar! It would be a good idea to know a little about the national curriculum in your best field and like Louise said, a lot about your experiences!

Hope to see you all soon!

Hey Vicki, thanks for your reply!

I looked into Kendrick Hall initially but was told I probably wouldn't be able to have a room due to when the tenancy starts (Primary pgce students start the term on 10th September and they don't start their flat tenancy until the 14th.) But after ringing up again and talking to another person I've put in an application to stay at Kendrick too!

It looks really modern, you can be with other Postgrads and is so close to London Road Campus so seems like the perfect choice for PGCE students!

Hopefully we'll run into each other and thank you for the tip

Hey Louise, thank you for the advice! How many people are there during the book presentation? Was there a maths test too? Thanks for the help.

Hi Vicki, I have applied for the PGCE specialising in french too, did you have to speak in French or was the interview only in english?

Sorry for all the questions, I really want to get a place on the course!

Thanks again x

You're very welcome  There were 3 of us in total for the presentation so was relatively relaxed and we didn't have to stand up either so it was quite informal! And there wasn't a maths test, just the writing exercise to look at your grammar and handwriting. Good luck with yours x

Hello Everyone.

I have my PGCE primary interview coming up for the university of reading and I am very nervous about the written task. I was hoping someone could be kind enough to let me know what you had to write about and how long you had?

With regards to the interview did you get asked about current education affairs?

Many thanks for your help!! Amy x

Hi! When is your interview? Mine is on the 8th of May, have you received any information regarding the interview?

Hello Amy, sorry about the late reply!

The written task was on a very vague question related to education, so really you could say whatever you wanted as there was no right or wrong answer. You get a piece of A4 and have to complete your answer in a box. We got as long as we wanted to complete it, you do it whilst you wait for and after the one on one interview. You'll be fine
They didn't put too much emphasis on current educational affairs, it was mainly about your experience. However, I did have a few under my belt to bring out if the question called for it. They mainly want to know about you though.

Vasandar, I got a few pages of information through email at the same time I got offered my interview. After that they just expect to see you on the day.

I wish you both lots of luck

Thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it! Hope your living arrangements are all sorted! Do you live far from Reading?

Hi Vicki! For the book presentation, where there people who had books in french? or was it only in english? thank you! x
Hello all!

I didn't realise there were any replies to the thread..didn't get any emails, so I am so sorry for being lame in replying! I hope i'm not too late..!

For the interview you can bring in a book in any language, but if you're going for the french specialising course, it would be a good idea to perhaps bring in a french book. The group interviews where you read an extract from your book is really relaxed and friendly.

I actually don't know french, and I went in for the straight primary interview, however, I am half german and brought in a german book and they discussed it and decided to put me in the french course instead! I am a little nervous about this, so probably should brush up on my basic french skills before the course starts!!

For the french course, as well as the written task, there will be a question you will need to answer in french too. I think this is just to also grasp your knowledge of vocab and grammar etc in the language. The written tasks are primarily there just to check these aspects, the general content is not the most important point! So don't worry too much, as long as your handwriting, grammar and spelling are fine!

Good luck in your interviews!! Amy and Vasandar, just relax and enjoy it and you'll be fine!!

xx
An answer to an earlier question I just saw... Vasandar, you don't have to speak the language as far as I'm aware, you just need to do a short written task in it. Good luck! xx

Hi Vasandar,

How did you interview go? Im not too sure how mine went, I thought the written task was difficult due to the question and struggled with some of the interview questions! Did they tell you when you will find out? Will it be via post, email or GTTR?
Reply 19
Hiya  I had my interview on the 1st May and still haven't heard :s-smilie: but they said it is normally within two weeks, but because it is so late they would hopefully get back to us within a week. So I am hoping to hear back soon!
They didn't say how they would inform us but am assuming by letter, as most of the people I interviewed with had a rejection by default on the GTTR as Reading did not inform it they had given us interviews.

Also I was wondering as the GTTR is not working, do we get informed either way if we have got in, or not? I am starting to think as they have no got back to me, I haven't got in :frown:
