How long does it take to receive photocopied script back?

So the deadline for asking for Edexcel GCE photocopies of scripts is 21st August (this coming Tuesday) and the deadline for asking for remarks is 10th September.

My plan is to get a photocopy of my marked script before deciding whether to get a remark. Can I assume I will receive the photocopy well in advance of 10th September to check this?

Yes, there should be plenty of time. Quite a few photocopies have come back already. Your school sets very early internal deadlines - the actual deadline with the exam board for a re-mark is 20 September.
