The Student Room Group

I don't know what to do!! Shall I drop out?

I don't know what to do?

So here the situation: At Loughborough Uni, 1st year, studying Sports science with Chemistry but I'm not enjoying it!!

Im not liking the course and I am finding the chemistry increasingly difficult, I am not putting any work in because I have no motivation too .. I am going to lectures though and being optimistic but nothing is changing and I still feel the same

I am also very home-sick as my home is in hampshire in the New forest which is about 150 miles away and difficult to get to by train. I miss my home, my mum and dad, the place where I live ... it so much quieter than loughborough

I also feel drained from lack of sleep.. because its so hard to sleep.. first of all it feels weird being in this room and not my room at home and second of all .. there is constant noise. Also I am finding it hard to sleep as I am thinking about all this stuff!!

I really don't know what to do!! I have contacted a couple of uni's closer to home to see if I could transfer but they said not till next year and i would have to go via Ucas again!! and I may have to start from year 1 if I wanted to do just straight sports science.

But to be honest I don't know if I can stay here till June.. But I don't want to drop out as I will look like a failure and I will feel guilty as I am the only child out of my Brother and sister who has gone to Uni.. Well my sister did go when she was 23 but dropped out and I don't want to turn out like her!! however she dropped out because she is lazy!! I am not lazy at least I hope I am not.

I'm scared of falling into depression if I remain unhappy here, which may seem dramatic, but then Im scared if I do drop out I might be unhappy because I will feel like a failure.. Someone help... Just give me some advice .. I have been here six weeks now.. What ever I do .. Im not taking any action till Christmas WebRep

Drop the Chemistry part and switch to straight sports science?

At some point you will have to get over your homesickness, you can't live with your parents forever. Now is as good a time as any.

You need to start putting the work in though. No motivation is no excuse.

I'm sorry if this wasn't what you wanted to hear. Be disciplined with yourself.
I don't think you should drop out, that's a pretty radical thing to do. I agree that dropping the Chemistry part might be a good option if you really feel you can't keep up with it. However, I'm assuming you've only been at uni for two or so months, so it's probably a bit too early to decide if you like the course. It can be quite hard in first year to get used to the different pattern of classes and studying in general, as well as just focusing on one subject, so I would give it some more time. Hopefully by next term, you will have become more used to it and start enjoying it!

Also, I think the homesickness will probably sort itself out the same way. If you'd never been away from home for so long before, it can feel strange at first, but you'll get used to it. And it's really important to learn to be independent, too.

They won't let me do straight sports science.. I don't go to the gym as im not keen on the environment, but I run long distances and I am part of the Athletics team, I socialise and have made friends .. just doesn't feel right. I have chemistry 3 it is a good text book. For the motivation thing .. I am motivated to run all the time, I was motivated in GCSE and A levels .. but now for my academic side its just gone!! No offense or anything but you don't sound mature enough for University yet. A lot of people aren't and it's perfectly okay.

Perhaps dropping out and going next year, or the year after (whenever you are ready) would be better for you emotionally and mentally. I would hold out for a month or so though because it can take people awhile to really get comfortable with the general University lifestyle. It's a shame because Loughborough is obviously a very good University, especially for Sports Science but its not the end of the world.

My advice would be to stop focusing on trivial things like missing your room. If you need to go out and get some things that will make your room more homely. I did and it worked out great, so much so I don't even like sleeping in my own room at home now. It could be posters, rugs, cushions, even the type of duvet cover you use. And like A levels, just get on with the work. Push yourself into doing it whether you're motivated or not. Get up, go to the library, and stay there until a sufficient amount is done. Secondly invest in some earplugs or something. If you really can't sleep well because of the noise (and the noise isn't excessive) then you'll have to suck it up and deal with it. If it IS excessive call security. Lastly keep yourself busy. You said you don't like going to the gym...for whatever reason, so join some societies, run on your own or with a group, listen to music, go out for dinner. Keep yourself occupied an happy. After awhile you can truly decide what is best for you.

No offence taken, I know inside I want to be that 8 year old again haha. Your advice is positive and I don't like going to the gym because i get too competitive with others at the gym.. so I'm running in a woods near by and Ive been going to training with the athletics and since being my times have already improve.. thats the good part. Thank you for your advice

Like another poster said, you need to get over your homesickness at some point as you can't live with your parents forever. If you're not enjoying your subjects then perhaps ask if you can look at a different subject? Chemistry is boring for people who have no interest, hell I got a D in science as I didn't even try. Are you making plenty of friends? Friends can make or break you whilst living in a different enviroment.

I'm in the exact same position as you believe it or not haha!

I'm at Glasgow Uni doing Zoology and Chemistry and I basically just don't like it! Chemistry is really hard and Biology is ok but to be honest, I KNOW for a fact I don't want to work in a Lab, so I don't have much career choice when I graduate. I'm going to change course too I think, so I'm doing UCAS again!

The problem is I don't know what I want to do with my life! I know I want a good stable career which pays well but I don't know what in! :/

I'm good at Science so I thought that would be the best Uni route for me but now I feel different! I want to have a career but just now I feel so low that I just want to walk away from Uni and never look back tbh haha! :/

I just wish there were decent careers you could walk in to without a degree, but nowadays if you don't have one you have no chance!

Anyone else had this experience?

Hey Chloe,

I think I am decided.. I am going to drop out at christmas, you may ask why wait.. but I just want to be sure haha. Find a full time job somewhere, and then go travelling in the summer months with my friends. So I am reapply now for a closer Uni  I know what you mean about not wanted to work in labs I can imagine it as being very boring haha. As for the zoology is there something else that you can combine it with that you really enjoy.. I wish there was a degree out there which is Sports science with photography because i love it but unfortunately there is not.
I don't know what the whole fee paying thing is in Glasgow but if you leave (lets not call it drop out) at christmas you only pay 25percent of your tuition fee for that year, so if you sure it better to do it then, than wait till christmas.
This Article really helped me: http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/mortarboard/2012/oct/25/dropping-out-of-uni-can-be-right-choice
Do you get the home sickness as well or do you live close?

To be honest, I think I'd definetly have dropped out by now, but my issue is that I'm in student accomodation and if I left I'd still have to pay for the full year, which is about £5000! :frown: If I leave there is no way I'll be able to afford this as I rely on my SAAS and Student Loan to pay for my accomodation! Bit of a pickle haha!

But I live about 40 minutes from my Uni!

I just feel so under pressure to decide what I want to do with my life at the moment! I don't want to just be going back to Uni in 4 years time when I've finally decided what to do when all of my friends are already graduating and making tonnes!

There's definitely waaaay too much pressure on young people to decide what they want from life really quickly!

This is the reason why it is never a bad idea to take a year out! I'd advise it for anyone with even the smallest shadow of a doubt about their course. Work full time, in the real world, get some social skills and experience in any field you think you may be interested, save some money and have a break after A- levels to get yourself all fired up and ready to get back to working! Never be afraid of taking time.

We get up to four years funding so I don't think you would have to pay it back until you finish the course as long as you tell them your plans. Yeah we shouldn't be afraid of taking time... if the age of retirement is going up we should take as much time as we like and enjoy life.... we are 18/19 we should be partying, getting silly drunk (not stupid drunk), going to bed at 6am, lying in till 6pm... we shouldn't be worrying about this?! Im just going to quit at christmas and ill let people judge me but it will show my real friends, I know that it will be right for me and if it turns out its not, that i made a mistake. Thats what I think I and so many people are worried about .. making mistakes but we should be allowed its the only way we really learn about life and ourselves. 2013 I will be born again. Start a new chapter! a new book even!! a fresh page
