Considering leaving MSc course?

Hi everyone,

A rather negative first post - apologies.

After working for many years in a rather specialised (if dull) field and making very good ££ in some of that time, but feeling the work was drying out and not that interesting really... I went back to Uni to do an MSc in a slightly different field.

I was hoping it would be more interesting and open different doors. In particular, I was hoping it would provide more job opportunities locally. Or maybe lead to an interesting PHd.

After 1 semester, I've done a lot of thinking over Christmas and New Year and fear that those goals are not working out on both fronts.

The tuition fees next direct debit £2k installment is end of this week. The 1st semester's exams are in the next two weeks. I have now cancelled the direct debit as I'm not sure whether to continue with the course. (Think it's a bit cheeky of them to try and get tuition fees just before the exams for the 1st semester.)

I have serious motivational problems which is affecting study for these exams.

A nice problem which doesn't help matters is that I've had recruiters on the phone for fairly lucrative contract work possibilities in my previous career.
I would take the job.

How much money have you invested in this so far?

What did you decide in the end?

I suppose it's in your advantage that you were paying by instalment, and so could try and justify not paying for the remainder of the course if you weren't going to attend (then again, the Uni could also raise the point that this is then lost money for them as your place could have been filled by someone that would complete the entire course - paying all the money they agreed to initially. This could be interesting...)

Personally, if you aren't having issues with the particular course, then I would stick with it. It's another 9/10 months maximum, and having a Masters is unlikely to be detrimental. Those job offers aren't going to dry up after the course when you're more qualified.

It's an uncomfortable and unpleasant decision process to have to go through but in your position (and only knowing what you've shared of your circumstances), I'd have done the same.

Hopefully you'll find that some short-term sacrifices will bring you longer-term benefits. The very best of luck.
