University maths assessment for engineering

I've contacted the university that I plan To go to study aerospace engineering, but I'm studying an extended diploma in engineering and A level physics, my predicted grades for the diploma are D*D*D and my physics A level is an A, they've all relied saying that's fine but I may need to take a maths assessment, only thing is they haven't specified what the maths assessment will consist of

I tend to do a lot of maths just because I know I need it for engineering but my college won't let me to A level maths because the amount of hours I can study in a year are 600 and I'm already at 860ish which they've only allowed me to do thanks to good feedback from my teacher an good grades from my first year of college!

Enough of the ranting, simple question is, does anyone know what a university engineering maths assessment will consist of?!?!

Thanks a million!

It would be based on stuff like calculus, trig etc. This is the sort of maths assessment I read that Sheffield university does to students that are coming from btec backgrounds to study electrical engineering. I am doing a btec engineering level 3 as well and I am in my second year and I will be applying to university's.

Someone actually replied! and well I'm studying an extended diploma but Im also studying A level physics which gives me the maths background, I'm also doing further maths unit in engineering, I also tend to do a lot of maths in my spare time, I've actually tried a few A level papers and got quite good grades, unfortunately my college won't let me sit A level maths as I'm already doing about 300 more hours a year than I should, what university's and subject you thinking of applying for?

You seem to be a good candidate as you had even said in your previous thread that you committed a lot of time onto your work. I thought you had been doing a level maths as that's what you said in one of your posts?

You seem to be a keen enthusiast in the aerospace industry so you to do do aerospace at uni. You could do a more broader degree such as mechanical or electrical engineering at uni then specialist in aerospace later on.

I have filled my UCAS form in I will be applying for nottingham and leeds for mechanical engineering. Lancaster for sustainable engineering. Sheffield for material science with nuclear engineering and Manchester university for electrical & electronic engineering. I would probably would want to choose Manchester as my firm as that's the course I would want to do and in the future I would hope to work in the energy or aerospace sector. I hope to do additional maths later before I get to Uni and so I would use a engineering maths book such as K.A stroud so I am not inferior to anyone else in the course (a level students).

Have you taken on A Level maths? If not, I'd assume that you will not be prepared for this test. Hence, I'd probably apply for Engineering Foundation Years or self-teach A Level maths (mechanics and pure). Tbh, I'd probably apply for the foundation year. A lot of Universities like you to have studied further maths with up to m3 so you are pretty behind in the maths front. A foundation year would prepare you well for University engineering.

No I'm doing A level physics but not maths, I was hoping to do it in one year but my teachers said there's no way I'd fit it on my timetable, and as someone else just stated I will be applying for a foundation year, my first choice is Southampton university, it's a degree in aerospace and astronautics but with an initial foundation year so that's my firm choice! The foundation year also made sense because I'd be a lot more prepared for the actual degree and it would allow me to aim for higher university's And I study quite alot of maths already simply because my A level physics needs me to have that maths ability, I got a B at AS but I'm hoping to get an A at A2 which is why I'm doing the maths in my own time!

Hi I'm going off to Liverpool in a couple of weeks to do the same test as you. Could you tell me what types questions they asked you? That would be really helpful.

Thanks

Hi I'm going to do the same maths test as you in a couple of weeks. Would you be able to inform me on what type of questions were in the test paper? That would be really helpful.

Thank you

This is a 2013 thread so the participants are unlikely to still be on TSR.

Best thing is to ask Liverpool University what you can expect.

Closing this thread as it is old and the OP has not been active since 2015 so hence is unlikely to reply. Please start a new thread for any new questions or discussion - hopefully you'll get more replies that way, and maybe it's also worth asking in the Liverpool University forum too.
