Geography Work Experience - Town Planning

I am going into year 11 so I am only doing GCSEs at the moment but I am pretty sure that I would like to eventually go on to study Geography at uni and I would therefore like to start getting some work experience etc. I have heard quite a lot about town planning as a possibility so I was wondering if anyone could tell me anymore about it and also how I would go about getting some work experience? i.e who should I contact? what should I ask for/what exactly is it that I should ask to get experience in?
