thanks for the links But don't these league tables fluctuate a lot and do top firms really consider Loughborough University over Oxford as the tables show?

Firms aren't interested in playing university top trumps; only students and applicants are.
Unfortunately, almost all of the answers you're likely to receive are going to be based on league tables.
What Smack said...honestly go to websites like 'rate my placement' or Gradcracker...what you do in uni will be more important than where you go imo, join student formula for example.
I really want to go into F1 engineering so any of those teams really, but obviously Mercedes would be the preferred choice.
In that case you want to be involved and take a lead role in a formula student team. The best unis for this tend to be bath, oxford brookes and loughborough who all are consistently up there making the best race cars.

Rankings are not as precise as they appear to be. The correct way to use them should be to recognising the 'group' they are consistently in. Within say the top 3 there would not be much between them. Then the next 10-15 will be marginal separating each. But there will be more clear differences between the top 15 and the bottom 15. Different universities attract different students as well as different lecturers and focus on different levels of research or maybe not so much research. They have different strengths and weaknesses.
