Hospital Management

Just a question that I thought on my clinical rotation but who runs a hospital? There are so many patients that need treating but there are limited bed spaces etc. I remember my tutor mentioned that there are managers but surely it should be doctors as they have medical training?
Hi,

Yes doctors can be managers as well, most hospitals are managed by a mixture of clinicians who have taken on management roles ( that span across disciplines so doctors, physios, nurses etc), and those who are not medically trained who just have management experience.

The organisational structure can be quite complex. I work at the university hospital for wales in Cardiff, here's a link to their organisation...http://www.cardiffandvaleuhb.wales.nhs.uk/opendoc/183072

If you're interested in knowing more as a student then I'd recommend the faculty of medical leadership and management, https://www.fmlm.ac.uk/
They do great conferences, cheap for students with very prominent speakers. I've just been to the regional welsh conference where Ruth Hussey the Chief Medical Officer and Marke Drakeford, Minister for health both spoke.

As a junior doctor you can choose to undertake a years training in management alongside your clinical training.
I'm a paediatrics trainee but currently taking a year out to do a "clinical leadership fellowship", which is basically a years management/leadership apprenticeship, and i get a postgrad diploma at the end.

Anyone interested in medical managers give me a PM, happy to share more info, very passionate about the fact that clinicians should be involved in managing health services!

Is this course/training run alongside with clinical training or do you need to take a year out?
What stage of clinical training do you need to be at in order to apply?
You can do it during a training programme but have to take an "out of programme" year, so you basically put your training on hold for a year.
You have to have completed F2 to start the programme, but you don't have to be in a training programme, ie you can do it between F2 and speciality training.

You can find more info on the English scheme here: https://www.fmlm.ac.uk/professional-development/national-medical-directors-clinical-fellow-scheme/clinical-fellows

There are separate schemes for Scotland, Wales and NI
