computing at bournemouth?

hi, i attended the open day and i loved what the uni had to give and the town was just what i was looking for, the only concern being its 40th for computing.


does anyone know what the computing course like at bournemouth here as a btec student without a b in gcse or a level maths my choices are limited to kent, surrey, sussex and bournemouth and enjoying surrey and bournemouth and disliking sussexs

So what if it's 40th on the league tables? Sure it is nice to be attending a top class university with world renowned research. However, a lot of employers especially in the Computing/IT industry won't care which university you attended. If you get a First/2:1, regardless of the university then you'll have many doors open to you.

The biggest issue with many of the top class universities is that many of the lecturers really do lack experience within the field.

If you like Bournemouth and feel you will be happy there then that is the best place for you. Unless you plan on going into an industry where there is a huge emphasis on gaining a degree from a prestigious institution then it doesn't really matter. What I will say is that if you do computing ensure that you put together a good portfolio of work to present in interview.

i feel its defiantly a place i would enjoy as it seems quite buzzing which i like but its just a concern of how the tutors are like cause if they are rubbish i dont think ill really consider it nevertheless the area.

im planning to do self teach python and other small little things to put together which i know will defiantly boost my chances. im just unsure how id really display the work but i guess theres a post elsewhere about this

Most of what you do at university is self driven anyway. I very rarely asked for help unless there was a topic I wanted clarification on. I honestly would not get hung up on how good you think the tutors are. You will do far better at a university where you have a good social life and make good friends. That will stop you feeling down and therefore you are likely to do better with your studies. I know loads of people who went to universities far away, felt isolated and couldn't mix because people were in their own social groups and they suffered because of it. Go with what makes you happy.

Kent, Liverpool, Bournemouth, Portsmouth and Plymouth are the choices I have picked. Although, I have not applied yet - just gotta ask my lecturer for a reference and I can send it.

Is Portsmouth terrible?

Southampton don't offer the course I would like to do. Southampton Solent does but I do not wish to go there as one of my choices. It ain't that good from looking at statistics plus the entry requirements are low. I need MMP which is equivalent to 200 points - This is dreadful if you only need those grades to apply there...

I am interested in "computing" course with a year in the industry. It's hard to find courses like these as they only have university rankings for computer science which is not what I am interested in. If you could find computing courses in other universities, that would be appreciated by me and many others!
