I can't really speak much for it. But then again if you liked the place the most then go for it?

So what if it's 40th on the league tables? Sure it is nice to be attending a top class university with world renowned research. However, a lot of employers especially in the Computing/IT industry won't care which university you attended. If you get a First/2:1, regardless of the university then you'll have many doors open to you.

The biggest issue with many of the top class universities is that many of the lecturers really do lack experience within the field.

its really just the quality of teaching id get from there elsewise id be happy to go as surrey doesnt really have the vibe id want

yeah thats very true at the end of the day as im not going to get in a top top uni without a levels in maths or a b in maths (got c, really dont want to retake if i have options like surrey bournemouth kent and even sussex said i can get in with a c)

just would like to see someones perspective of learning there as i cant find anything except from computer animation which they excel in

If you like Bournemouth and feel you will be happy there then that is the best place for you. Unless you plan on going into an industry where there is a huge emphasis on gaining a degree from a prestigious institution then it doesn't really matter. What I will say is that if you do computing ensure that you put together a good portfolio of work to present in interview.

i feel its defiantly a place i would enjoy as it seems quite buzzing which i like but its just a concern of how the tutors are like cause if they are rubbish i dont think ill really consider it nevertheless the area.

im planning to do self teach python and other small little things to put together which i know will defiantly boost my chances. im just unsure how id really display the work but i guess theres a post elsewhere about this

thanks a bunch :-)

Most of what you do at university is self driven anyway. I very rarely asked for help unless there was a topic I wanted clarification on. I honestly would not get hung up on how good you think the tutors are. You will do far better at a university where you have a good social life and make good friends. That will stop you feeling down and therefore you are likely to do better with your studies. I know loads of people who went to universities far away, felt isolated and couldn't mix because people were in their own social groups and they suffered because of it. Go with what makes you happy.

So you're telling me employers don't care if you go to Cambridge or Bournemouth? Okay m8.

i suppose thats very true, i defiantly have felt the effects and thats an important factor thats why i ruled out sussex as it seemed to be like a army looking camp as its so old fashioned haha. at college i am driven fully by myself as the tutors here are horrendous and pretty much have been seeked out from jobcentre on how much lacking knowledge they have, i guess ill be used to it if it goes to crap

thanks, defiantly something to take into consideration

Glad you can read mate.
Same scenario as me, I attended the open day. It was really good, I enjoyed everything they had to show but it was slightly disorganized. I'm torn between Liverpool, Kent and Bournemouth. Liverpool and Kent have the statistics but didn't attend the open day sadly. I got a C in Maths but I chose the BTEC route as I am more a coursework person, exams are not my forte and I tend to struggle in them.

Kent, Liverpool, Bournemouth, Portsmouth and Plymouth are the choices I have picked. Although, I have not applied yet - just gotta ask my lecturer for a reference and I can send it.

Either way, which ever university you are applying for, make sure you get a good balance as stated above from other people. I enjoyed the computing talk, really informed me and made the decision I wanted to do that course. Tough decision is what university to go to. Overall, Bournemouth is an all rounder really. Go with your heart (as cheesy as that sounds haha) and chose the one you want to go to. Don't let anyone pick for you, you'll be there for 3-4 years so pick which one felt "right" or you could definitely live there for that period of time. I could see myself living in Bournemouth, it has a good atmosphere and the campus is maintained really well.

As I am applying there, let me know if you apply

I'd swap Portsmouth for Southampton, if you can. Not sure on the entry requirements though.
Is Portsmouth terrible? Southampton don't offer the course I would like to do. Southampton Solent does but I do not wish to go there as one of my choices. It ain't that good from looking at statistics plus the entry requirements are low. I need MMP which is equivalent to 200 points - This is dreadful if you only need those grades to apply there...

It isn't terrible by any means but the University of Southampton is better and has a highly regarded Computer Science department.

What particular course is it that you want to do? I'll try to find you a list of similar ones you and others might be interested in.
I am interested in "computing" course with a year in the industry. It's hard to find courses like these as they only have university rankings for computer science which is not what I am interested in. If you could find computing courses in other universities, that would be appreciated by me and many others!

If I were you I would consider Computer Science and then choose the modules that suit you. Often, its nothing more than a technicality on the name. There are many Computer Science courses with a year in industry as well and if you select the more practical modules you'll be doing pretty much what you want. Other than that I recommend you find a specialist type of course - Internet Computing, Systems Administration, Networking (de_monies on here will give you more information) or Computer Forensics. If you're big on programming then a degree in Software Engineering may be more for you.

The only other thing I'd consider is doing a degree in Internet Computing. All three of those courses listed are in places with a good reputation in regard to their Computer Science departments and are areas where student satisfaction is very high so you're likely to have a great social life too.

Internet Computing

Computer Forensics

I don't like Computer Science as it is more mathematical based. Also, I don't know what field I would like to go into which is why Computing gives you all of the broad skills for various fields so you can specialise in a field in the 4th year.

I saw Portsmouth today, I don't think I will be applying there. It was not as good as I thought it would be. I couldn't hear most of the talks as they did not turn on the microphone.. I liked that they invested 9m into the faculty of Technology but the lecturers seemed bored with there talks. They spoke in one tone so you never really got interested in listening and they weren't as enthusiastic about there courses that they teach. I am thinking of applying to Swansea for the mENG Computing course; although you need a grade B in Maths, I am going for Distinction* Distinction* Distinction* to enable me to get on the course.
