Hi, I'm out there at the mo and it's rather ace.
I'm a geographer too actually, it's generally pretty competitive to get in (there were something like 9 applicants for the 2 places last year) but it's great fun.
In terms of expens, it is more expensive than a year in Durham because accomodation costs are higher, but on the other hand, living costs are lower. If you get in you should definitely apply for a University of California bursary(3 grand), I did and without it I probably wouldn't be out here.
Well, I don't know how it is coming back to my friends in Durham as I've not come back yet but by all accounts it's fine. However, I suspect that it definitely changes your experience of Durham.
Any more questions feel free to ask!

Thanks for your answer.

This year there's only one space for a Geographer so it'll be slightly more competitive. What was the application process like for you? We have to write a personal statement type of thing but I'm not entirely sure after that - were there interviews?

Also, in terms of coming home for christmas and easter - can you stay over there in uni accomodation as I don't think I'd be able to afford to fly back for both holidays.

What are the module choices like? I see you're doing BA Geog which is what I'm doing so can you specialise in that or do you have to do a mix of human and physical out there?

Sorry for all the questions!

One geographer? Harsh! UC must be cutting down, apparently they threatened to do that last year.
I wrote a personal statement saying how much I wanted to go to UC, what I'd get out of it, why I'm suited to it etc. a bit like a personal statement really. I mentioned a coupleof specific courses and professors I'd like to be taught by too. The personal statement was then weeded to produce 4 candidates who were interviewed, these were then sorted into the 2 people who were going plus 2 reserves.

You won't be able to fly back at easter because the holiday is only a week long! It's the mythical 'spring break'. In my current uni accomodation you can't stay over holidays, but at some other UCs or if you get a private apartment then you can.

Module choices are very free and easy, you can pretty much do what you want as 3rd year geography has no prerequisites. However, you have to keep the people in Durham advised with what you are doing and how it helps you etc. Because I despise physical geography I've dumped it completely and am currently doing Urban geography, historcal geography and transport systems planning. However, I have a friend from KCL who's doing a mix of modules so it's perfectly easy to do either.

Don't worry, I had about a million questions before too!

this sounds amazing, is that available for economics students aswell? (assuming i get an offer from durham uni, get the necessary alevel grades and successfully complete year one - i might be interested myself)

Don't think so. The departments that do it are classics, history, philosophy, geography, engineering and english (I think). Plus it occurs right after you arrive, you have to apply about 4 weeks after you come to Durham and the actual exchange is instead of your second year in Durham.
However, of the unis you applied to Warwick,Edinburgh and Manchester (I think) are all on the same program so they might let economists in.
what about Physics ? I would like to go UC too .. is it the Berkeley one ?

UC Berkeley is one of the UCs yep, and I don't thnk the physics department runs that exchange, sorry.
Just to be smug at Durham physicists, we have 2 nobel prize winners on the faculty of the physics department here (not that I really care) :p:

I'm jealous.:frown:

Most of the courses I applied to at other universities involved a year in Europe (France for me) except Durham of course... I really regret not doing some French now.
that's so sad .. i'm hoping to go to the States ..:frown:

Don't feel too bad. In my experience so far France is booooooooring. Maybe I should have gone somewhere else other than Limoges though. Even my parents found it boring!
