I've not found Rootes to be loud at all. Go for it, just put on your application form that you also like quiet time in which to work, and they'll probably match you up with what they expect to be a quieter corridor

Was wondering about Rootes...is it difficult sharing a kitchen with so many people? Or are there like two microwaves and things so that people don't have to wait for ages? Also does anyone know whether being in JM would make things difficult socially? Like Lili! I'm looking to be with people who like to go out but not every single night, so definitely not unsociable people. And another (this is the last!), do they put people of similar courses living near to each other so that people can integrate that way?

Thanks!

No, I don't believe that course has any impact on accommodation; in fact, they might look at it solely to make sure you're well mixed with people on other courses .

There's one oven, one hob and one microwave in each kitchen. However, it wasn't really much of a problem, only occasionally does someone have to wait for someone else in order to cook. It's just something you get used to really easily . Besides, doesn't Rootes have one of the better kitchen:tongue:eople ratios?

Thanks, I might do just that! What do you think of JM? I heard it's more sociable than AV and Lakeside..? The only two I don't really want to be in are Whitefields and Tocil. They looked kind of.. ugly?! haha sounds slightly pathetic, but I think I've taken them off the list!

So yeah, I think I'll pick Rootes and JM.. any ideas for the third?

Well, if you don't mind the walk Westwood has big rooms, a nice campus and some quiter blocks.

It's 12 or 13:1. Which is not unreasonable and probably about average for ratio.

And as for courses, our Rootes corridor consisted of:
2 x History
2 x Sociology
2 x MORSE
1 x Chemistry
1 x History of Art
1 x Engineering
1 x Theatre Studies
1 x Biological Sciences
1 x Law
1 x Economics.

So basically, courses had no effect on groupings, other than they were probably keen to avoid 8 of the same.

Unless the rules have changed significantly, no. Other than I think Westwood, halls have set periods for letting (either 30 or 39 weeks, no option to choose which you want).

yeh i think it says you can apply for one ensuite 30 weeks and another ensuite 39 weeks- but just not e.g. two ensuite accommodations which are 30 weeks.
Is accomodation given on a first come first serve basis kinda thing? What if loads of people end up applying to rootes, and there are not enough spaces, what happens then?
Reply 790
No, it isn't first-come-first-serve.

They allocate everyone fairly based on their short personal description and matching them up.
If more people have Rootes as their first choice than there are rooms, then some of them will be allocated their second, or possibly third choice ^^

What kind of people reside at the different houses? I know it obviously varies from year to year and from corridor to corridor, but there must be some stereotypes?

Woah, I just checked and the rules have actually changed

"Application form
Consider your accommodation options and then state your preferences on the online accommodation application form
List at least three choices, only one of which can be in a residence offering en suite facilities for 30 weeks and one of which can be a residence with en suite facilities for 39 weeks, this is because the number of applications for these halls is usually substantially larger then the number of rooms available"

Yeah but that's still not in the way that I was implying. As far as I can see, JM and AV still have fixed terms of rent (ie 30 weeks), I believe Lakeside is 39 weeks.

Hey folks,
Just a few - basically I thought that I may aswell get the accommodation stuff sorted now cos i pretty much know what I'm looking for. On my application i put Rootes 1st, JM 2nd and Cryfield 3rd (had only really thought about the 1st 2) I really wanna be in Rootes tho cos from this thread i don't think it JM sounds like the place for me. Im one of those lucky people who is rarely bothered by noise and i can sleep through pretty much anything. I said on my form that I generally go to bed late, love to socialise and always up for meeting new people. Didn't really put much else cept for taste in music and the like, what u reckon to my chances?
Also, it turns out a friend of mine from school is also applying to rootes this year. I know unis in general like you not to live near schoolfriends, which is fine, but do u reckon itll affect either of our chances of being put in rootes?
Thanks!

Pretty much nailed on gonna get Rootes by what you put - taste in music wouldn't come into it.

As for schoolfriends, I doubt they'd even bother looking at where you're from. And even if they did, they could just put you in different parts of Rootes if they felt so inclined. In my Rootes corridor of 13 last year, 2 girls were from the same school (though one had been on a gap year) and there was a boy from the boys' grammar next door to it. Just coincidental.

Warwick isn't like that, it even says on your form that you can apply to live in the same halls as someone else, so I doubt they'd care if you were from the same school friends. At least it did offer that option last year.

I think it does, but even though Benefactors has one of the worst (22 to one kitchen) the kitchen is twice as big, especially if you're downstairs. And you get two of everything. You very rarely have to wait (mostly just for oven shelves..) and there's much more space to cook. Especially as there's never 22 people cooking at the same time. :P

Also, in terms of storage, you get an entire strip (well almost, i think there's 22 people and 20 cupboards) of storage. As in a top cupboard with 3 storage places, a drawer and a bottom cupboard with a shelf.

Most other places you only get a tiny cupboard...not even that ¬_¬

Not nessercarily,in Rootes we had a top cupboard, a drawer and a bottom cupboard each with a couple of spare cupboards and drawers left over.
Is there anything i can write in my description part to make it more likely that i will get new rootes?
I know that its probably all pot luck but i would really like to get new rootes.. x
