I can confirm, having retaken an AS unit this year which I totally flopped because the subject just wasn't a priority to me (it didn't count towards my university offer and was for my own satisfaction), that your best grade does indeed stand, even if you've done worse the second time round.

Your best one will stand. You may be thinking of the old rule where remarks could only go up and not down, but that is no longer the case.
