Optometry vs Diagnostic Radiography vs Orthoptics

Hello everyone. I was contemplating to do the Diagnostic Radiography course in 2016,therefore I decided to get some work experience. While on work experience I noticed that Radiographers were usually together and were seen to work within a team. I also saw that there were a lot of remarks made about each other which wasn't nice to see. This kind of put me off. I felt as though I would be better in a career where I worked on my own initiative. I useto think that radiographers also worked alone however when I went for work experience I did not see this at all. I therefore am contemplating between optometry and orthoptics. I have heard that careers within Optometry is getting weaker in comparison to Radiography and that Orthoptists dont get paid as much as Optometrists. I am confused as to which career path to go down on. I have looked at every university websites and all the modules within all 3 courses which do interest me. I was just wondering if those who have qualified or are undertaking this course could give me an insight?

Thankyou
hey! i'll be applying for 2017 entry and I'm in the same position as you.. I've had an interest in optometry for a while and I retook a year and hoping to get into optometry but I'm considering radiography as a back up just in case but I'm not sure... :-/

Hey! i decided to go with diagnostic radiography because you have many different areas ypu can specialise in as well as many opportunities  also there is a huge shortage of radiographers therefore meaning easier to get a job aftet graduation  what did you decide doing?

Hi, I'd really recommend Diagnostic Radiography as career prospects are looking really good, Optometry recently has been quite saturated. Alternatively if you really like "eyes" you could study Orthoptics as entry requirements are similar if not easier and is quite similar but is more niche. Unsure of job availability but my cousin is one and she said she preferred it over Optom.
Hi there!

I'm a student ambassador for Orthoptics at the university of Liverpool!
I'm sorry to hear you didn't have a great time on your work experience in radiography.
The best way to differentiate between which course and career you want to do is to get some work experience prior to applying, so it's great that you're already doing that!
Maybe some work experience with optometrists and within an orthoptic department would help make it clear to you which you prefer, and it is also very beneficial to have when applying to university!

I hope this helps and if you have any questions feel free to ask or follow @LivUniOrthoptic on twitter, facebook and instagram to keep up to date with students and the orthoptics course at Liverpool

Good luck!
