BSci Computer Science, and general opinions on uni.

Hey all,

I have recieved a conditional offer to The course at swansea and was wondering if I could get some feedback from people at the university or on the course.

I am unable to attend an open day and this would very much help me!

So I am very interested in the software side of computer science, specifically rendering graphics to a screen, AI and cryptography. How good is the university in these areas?

What are the facilities like at the university like? Good computer areas with natural lighting, or decade old computers in dark caves? :P

Also, what's the City life like? I don't perticulally enjoy clubbing and massive binging alcohol parties, and was wondering what's in the city which might interest a kinda nerdy/geeky guy like myself?

Many thanks in advance for any answers,
Cas

you may need more specialised answers than I can give but I will try and explain the city. Like every city it has a nightlife area called Wind Street which probably doesn't interest you. Swansea is a small city but has a bowling place, theatres, 3 cinemas, casino etc and a shopping centre which has shops like Debenhams, M & S, BHS, Next Primark, New Look etc. What makes Swansea different from other places is it is right on the coast so you can go over the busy main road and you are on the beach. The uni itself has excellent sports facilities and has a 50 metre pool. The New Zealand All Blacks used the facilities for training during the World Cup. Mumbles about 4 miles away is a lovely village with more pubs lovely restaurants and ice cream parlours. This really the chic area. The city has a marina almost in the centre of town. Swansea's surrounding area is known as Gower and the Gower was Britain's first area of natural beauty. It has internationally renowned beaches like Caswell and Langland near Mumbles and stunning Oxwich and Three Cliffs bays. Rhossilli is the jewel in the crown and has been voted the best beach in Europe by Trip Adviser and one of the world's top 10. There are numerous videos on youtube of Swansea University and Swansea and Gower

What's everyone's offers for CS at Swansea?
I'm currently studying chemical engineering at swansea so I can't comment on the comp sci course but I can tell you about the state of the facilities at the uni.

Assuming you will be based at Singleton campus, the computing facilities are limited with most being located in the library. '
decade old computers in dark caves' is a very apt decription. Most of the computers are old, dirty and slow, with the majority still running windows 7. The silent computer areas are full of people eating and talking loudly despite this being against the rules it is never enforced. The whole library and also the campus in general has a very run-down dilapidated look and feel to it.

Also, good luck if you are studying into the evening and need to use the toilets as they are completely filthy. People urinate all over the seat and the floor, leave toilet paper everywhere and don't bother to flush. I was at Singleton last year and I would actually walk home to used my own toilet rather than go at the uni thay are that bad.

Quite insightful, thanks. Anyone else care to comment on Swansea Uni? Need some help deciding.

Yes, could you address some of the points raised by Decode?

I've looked round swansea and he's full of ****, the compsci department has tons of their own good computers. The facilities look pretty good in general and that's on the singleton campus, compsci is moving to the brand new custom built building soon.

Every single post he has ever made has been posting in threads like this telling people that swansea is **** for every subject.
I have spent time at Singleton Park and it certainly isn't anything like Decode describes. This is obviously someone who has a huge gripe and every sinle person who I have spoken loves it. Your best bet is to visit and decide for yourself
Are any of the people refuting my claims actually Swansea uni students? What people have you spoken to who love it? Are you talking about the student ambassadors who show prospective students around? You do realise they are hand picked to make the uni look good?

To the person who says the comp sci deparment has loads of good computers please tell me where these computers are located, what the specs are, how old are they and what operating system are they running?

The state of singleton campus is no secret, anybody can go and look around for themselves and I would recomend any prospective student does just that. Don't take my word for it, just look for your self. Facts speak louder than words.

Lets get the facts straight. They were not ambassadors and I have spoken to hundreds over the years and not one single person has said anything like you. I actually worked there on exams in January in various buildings Kier Hardie, Grove, Margam, Technium, Vivian and Fulton and part of my duties was accompanying students who wished to leave the exam to toilets. I spoke to literally hundreds of students before and after exams and EVERYONE really liked both the university and the city. I have travelled daily on a bus where students travelled for many years and that is the view everyone I have spoken to has provided. In fact the only derogatory comments have come over the state of the older part of the students village which is about to be closed. As you are no doubt aware 4 buildings Talbot, Vivian. Taliesyn Annexe and Amy Dillwyn are about to be knocked down, Wallace has undergone a recent refurbishment. There are 3 buildings built in the last 10 years 2 institute of science buildings and the Data Science building. Whatever the reason for your bitterness is ALL the students I have spoken to do not share it and that is in the 100s if not 1000s
Hi Everyone,

I am a member of staff here at Swansea University and I am happy to answer any questions you may have about our Computer Science course and the facilities here at Swansea.

Last September we opened our brand new Bay Campus which is currently for the College of Engineering and the School of Management. This new campus has state of the art facilities and a brand new library with plenty of study space for all students to use.

As part of the new Bay Campus, the Computer Science department will be opening a brand new building called the Computational Foundry which will be ready for September 2018 entry. The Computational Foundry will be backed with £17m from the European Regional Development Fund and will drive research into computer science and make Wales a global destination for computer scientists and industrial partners.
You can find out more about the new Computational Foundry building here:
http://www.swansea.ac.uk/media-centre/latest-news/31meuboostforworld-classcomputersciencehubinswansea.php

Currently, the Department of Computer Science is based on our Singleton Park Campus and is well equipped for undergraduate teaching. The department is continually upgrading its laboratories to ensure equipment is up to date. Equipment is never more than three years old and rarely more than two.
Currently, students use five fully networked laboratories: three, running Windows; another running Linux; and a project laboratory, containing specialised equipment. These laboratories support a wide range of software, including the programming languages Java, C# and the .net framework, C, C++, Haskell and Prolog among many; integrated programme development environments such as Visual Studio and Netbeans; the widely-used Microsoft Office package; web access tools; and many special purpose software tools including graphical rendering and image manipulation tools; expert system production tools; concurrent system modelling tools; World Wide Web authoring tools; and databases. We are also part of the MSDNAA which entitles students to download most Microsoft Software freely for their own academic use (including the latest Windows OS, Visual Studio, SQL server).
You can find out more about the Department of Computer Science here:

Please let me know if any of you have any other questions and I will try my best to help.

So just to be clear, you are an exam invigilator who has travelled on the bus with students? And you think that makes your opinion more valid than an actual student? You are obviously speaking from a position of bias.
Also, please check this link to get some idea of how honest Swansea university staff are:

]No you have it wrong again. For many years before working for 2 weeks in January I have travelled into and out of Swansea on buses passing the Hendrefoilan Student Village and regularly talked to students. Their views were the same as those expressed by students in January. One day a student got on at the village with a very large case. He had just finished and was returning to Beijing. Iasked him whether he was glad to go home and he said he wished he was staying here. He actually loved the open spaces it offered. There used to be a couple of Brazilians who regularly caught the bus in the morning to attend the Gym in Town. They expressed the same feelings. All were studying engineering courses at Singleton before it moved. One of the exam invigilators was a far eastern individual who was studying a Phd here. She expressed the same feelings. Another was a Black American who loved it here and explained how she suffered little racism here compared to America. These are a handful of details of what others have said. They simply do not fit with your view. As far as toilets are concerned I used the same toilets before and after exams had finished. I cannot comment on computer issues I didn't use them but the fact is very many people are happy with their experience and are not anywhere near as bitter as you. Finally as regards open days at universities they do not always give a fair reflection simply because ambassadors as you say are biased towards their universities and anyone attending an open day in any university needs to be aware of that. Whatever university open day you attend everything is organised to show that place at its best. If possible seeing a university on a normal day gives a far better reflection.

What are you even talking about? I never commented on Swansea as a city, only on the university itself.

So I was right. You are an invigilator whose opinion is based on talking to the occasional student on the bus and not a student yourself. My perspective is as a currrent student studying at Swansea uni on a daily basis.

If you used the toilets before and after exams then it would have been in the daytime and during exam period. My comment was about the state of them in the evenings after the cleaners go home but with a lot of students still using the library.

Your view simply does not fit with the hundreds and possibly thousands of others. Those were a few examples. What is very interesting is that while the first year students generally like the new campus those I spoke to who had previously studied at Singleton preferred it.
