So, thanks to a 'special needs' form (gay) I'm in East Slope, but on a priority move list :awesome:

Is there actually a sexuality question? :s-smilie:

yes, you will get all the information sent to you next year, but don't worry, because you're a gap-year person you will get accommodation priority and pretty much get your first choice

Where would people say is the second most sociable place?

I'm not sure I could cut it at East Slope. I DO want to make the most of the first year but relentless music that isn't Britney Spears could soon start to piss me off, and I'm a bit of a clean snob so couldn't deal if my fellow 11 housemates messed up my cleaning.

Ummm... Well Park Houses and Park Village you're pretty much going to have the same problem with 12 people to a kitchen and all. Brighthelm is probably a good choice for you though!! 6 to a kitchen (i think?!) and a house type layout, but it's meant to be pretty sociable there so I've heard!! Plus your right next to East Slope if you want the action.
Reply 590
5 in Brighthelm.
But Brighthelm is crap unless you have a refurbished house. nothing works.
Reply 591
Can't be any worse than East Slope though, right? Haha.

I think the little Brighthelm houses look so charming! It's like a little holiday village. I've decided against Lewes Court. Way too far out of the way. It's East Slope or Brighthelm for me.

A question: do the 'types' of people differ a lot in the different accomodations. A la, (and I'm being totally stereotypical here) the stoner hippies in Slope and the Jack Wills douches in Lewes? Or is there a nice mix consistent throughout the accomodation.
Reply 592
lol I live in Brighthelm, you should trust my judgment a bit more :P

Have you looked in Brighthelm? Cos I'm assuming if you have they took you to a nice done up house. I'm not entirely sure how many houses have been done up, but out of the 5 different Brighthelm houses I have been in, only 1 of them has been refurbished. So you will most probably end up with a crappy house that hasn't been done up. Every single person I know in Brighthelm has a complaint about their showers (they don't work/they are either too hot or too cold), the general bathroom areas are pretty crap/peple don't really care about any household complaints/the cleaners are a bit **** There are good things though-room is really good, and you get a washing machine and tumble dryer (only accommodation that has this.) kitchen area is okay and so is the sofa bit (only some houses get sofas) but then the general hygiene depends on who you live with (mine is quite messy a lot of the time but i know that's not everyone's fault)

Your point about stereotypes, tbh, is pretty true. Yes, you will find the more 'richer' kids in the better accommodation, but that is natural. Tbh it's not just about making friends with who you live with, so I guess it's not the end of the world. However, with East Slope that is pretty much a drug den/loud people place/people who never go to lectures/seminars. If you're really concerned with the type of people you associate with then Park Houses/Park Villege will have less 'rich' kids and more 'normal' kids. Tbh I wouldn't judge where I live by what type of people live there cos you're bound to meet awesome people in other places, but that's up to you.

I'm just going to be flat out honest here- unless you already have a confirmed place (as in, not conditional) then you are more than likely NOT to get Brighthelm, Lewes Courts, or Swanborough. If you picked East Slope you would probably get that, but most people I know who picked Brighthelm ended up in their 5/6/7th choice (this being Park Houses/Park Village.) Brighthelm is ridiculously oversubscribed, and in my opinion is not worth the rent per week.

hope this has helped a bit!

I love that everyone is dismissing Lewes Court because it's "out of the way". Just wait til the 2nd year when you live in town! Seriously guys Lewes Court is less than 5 mins walk on from any of the others and Park Village goes right up to the back as well. Plus if you're in Lewes Court you have the downs as your garden

Seconded....though what with the building of the new halls of residence i don't think the view is quite what it used to be. But still!!! No hills to climb to get home, unlike Brighthelm & East Slope.......would have hated that this icey winter!

I live at the top of Brighthelm and had literally the best view on campus, and now everyday I look out my window and see the whole building site...I'm gonna miss watching the cows/deer soon :frown: (and yes, the ice/several inches of snow SUCKED :P)
I feel like randomly giving my very detailed opinion of the accommodation since clearly people are looking it up again and there's a lot of posts to go through on this thread! And also because I have an essay due in 22 hours that I'm trying to put off :P
Take into consideration that this is written by someone who has lived in some grotty places, receives the maximum loan and grant and gets no monetary help from her parents; what seems reasonable or ridiculous for me may well be the opposite for you if you're in different (and hopefully more fortunate) circumstances.
Please note my 'scene' descriptions are to be taken lightly, are in my experience only and of course do not cover everyone in that accommodation

Brighthelm (I live here): Well I live two doors away from flossy and pretty much agree with her on everything. Don't get me wrong, compared to the East Slope slums Brighthelm is heaven, but it is NOT all its cracked up to be.

Pros:
Looks nice on the outside
Balcony, although you'll never get to use it outside september or may cos it's too cold
Massive rooms, loads of storage
Kitchen table, a sofa if you're lucky (I was not -.-)
If your bathroom actually works, you will be sharing with only 1 or two other people. If bathrooms are for some weird reason an issue for you, then brighthelm is pretty sweet; I share with just one girl and it's always spotless and lovely, and I never worry or feel self conscious about sharing (I thought I would before I got here; if you too get bathroom anxiety, I can guarantee that sharing a bathroom at uni will eradicate this fear forever).

Cons:
£102 a week and not even an en-suite is a disgusting rip-off.
£102 a week and not even a working shower is even more of a rip-off. Oh and you guys will be paying more than that
Not very secure, keys will open other houses, the front door looks like it only needs a small kick and it will open, some houses don't have proper locks/handles on the windows/patio doors
Washing machine is not all that, chances are you'll never get to use it cos your flatmates will invite all their friends to use it, meaning you have to wait forever for these strangers to remove their clothes so that you can use the appliance you pay rent for
Massive hill to climb for the majority of people
Antisocial compared to the other accommodation, even if you make a massive effort to get to know your neighbours. Parties are rare and generally small affairs thanks to the effort required to get up said hill -.-

Scene: Jack Wills kids, private school kids, gap year kids, Oxbridge rejects. Lots of internationals, most of them seem to be lovely :] I also live with a mature medical student but they seem to be rare in general on campus

Lewes Court Ph 1: I've been in a couple of these, both on the top floor, one was a quiet house and apparently pretty dead hah.
Pros:
Nice number of people, possible to get to know the people on the other floors
Nice kitchen, space to eat, big corridors
Bathroom's acceptable

Cons
Not worth what you pay (currently 98 quid a week for non-ensuite, this will be over the 100 pound mark for '10/11)
Again, you can end up miles away up a hill
Not so much of a big deal next year, but at the moment there is very noisy building work going on right next to the accommodation set to last until the end of the year, which wasn't really emphasised to people when they signed their tenancy agreement or mentioned in the prospectus when they applied. I know a couple of people who had to swap recently because they were literally being driven mad by this

Scene: So far I've met generally normal people, most of them who are just lucky enough to get money from their parents but don't feel the need to brag about it/prance around the place

Lewes Court ph 2 - not been here yet! and never met anyone from here either 0.o I don't think it actually exists

Park Village: Been to many of these, and it seems to be luck of the draw whether its ok or awful, mostly dependant on housemates. Some are refurbished and look pretty nice, the rest are standard student ickiness in terms of kitchens, but overall its not too bad. Rooms are a medium size, no more than what you need really.

Pros:
In the ones I've visited there's a girl floor, a boy floor and a middle mixed up floor, which means the boys keep their mess to themselves hah.
Very sociable; everyone knows the 11 other people in their house and usually all their neighbours/half of park village as well.
Loads of parties
Generally normal people, everyone is pretty relaxed
Cheap without having to live in a slum

Cons:
Not really ideal if you like peace and quiet, dislike drugs and parties. It could be described in some areas as the upper class version of East Slope (although this doesn't apply to every house!)
There is no table. This makes many people very angry/desperately unhappy for some reason. If you end up here, use your initative; get some bean bags/cushions/inflatable sofas
I have seen some rooms on the boy floor that....were less than pleasant. More to do with the people living in them though.

Scene: Bit of a mix really, not come across anyone overtly 'posh', everyone's generally down to earth or just skint

Park Houses: Four different houses, each have their own 'character' apparently, but I will give an overview based on what I've seen.

Pros:
I would say they are value for money from what I can tell.
Sociable, most similar to normal student 'halls'
TV room! I am very jealous of this. Although I've heard they keep getting closed where people have parties in them.
You're not up a hill. This means you don't have to psyche yourself up every time you want to go to the shop/library/a lecture haha. You're also very close to your lectures/seminars generally, so you can leave about 5 minutes before. MORE SLEEPING TIME!
They're all very close to the union store (york house is on top of it!), and bramber house is less than 5 minutes away. You will appreciate this when you're craving something to eat at 10:39pm.

Cons:
The kitchens suck apparently, and theres a lot of people to share with, although the one I was supposed to swap to only has 6 per kitchen and bathroom apparently? Not sure how all that works, someone better informed will explain I'm sure.
Rooms in Kent House are meant to be small relative to the others
It's like living in a block of flats rather than a house, some people will be bothered by this.
I get the impression it can be noisy at times, although this is similar in most housing

Scene: All the kids who missed out on Brighthelm/Swanborough/Lewes. But they all seem to enjoy it here well enough. I would say this is the real 'middle' accommodation, not too glam, not too gross, just standard everyday student accomm.

Stanmer Court: The best way to sum it up is: Travelodge. No, seriously, you walk in and you feel like you're in a hotel. I haven't been in a bedroom so I can't comment on them, but the kitchen is DIVINE, there's loads of space in the living area, I think they get sofas and a table and its just lovely, only 6 people to share with as well I believe.
Cons: You are miles away from everyone else on campus (if you're not lazy this doesnt stop you from being involved with everyone), it's quite expensive, but you do get an en-suite.

Scene: Everyone I've met from here is really well off - not surprising considering the cost. People are pretty quiet, or just normal, so probably a good one for people who like their space. Kids who are scared to share a bathroom but can't afford/didn't get into Swanborough

Swanborough (the one with the magical coloured windows)
Pros:
Ensuite is pretty nice
You get a coloured window
Sofa and nice kitchen
Very secure!
Heated towel rail! <---you are automatically not a real student

Cons:
Your room is TINY. You get a biggish wardrobe, bedside table, and a desk, but compared to Brighthelm storage space is rubbish. However my friend has a hamster hidden in hers so I guess there must be *enough* space, even if its not as generous.
The ceilings are stupidly high and if there was a spider up there and you have a phobia, there is no way anyone would be able to reach it and remove it  :woo:

Scene: Rich kids, kids too scared to share bathrooms, rich international quiet kids.

East Slope: Party accommodation. I have had some terrifying nights here  I'm confused whether this is being knocked down or rented out next year but I will write anyway.

Pros:
CHEAP
If you like parties/socialising constantly you will probably have the time of you life here
Interesting layout (LOL)
Legendary!
Some very epic people living here

Cons:
You probably won't be able to use your kitchen too easily as in most cases it seems to get covered in...EVERYTHING.
If you dislike a) parties, b) noise, c) the smell of weed, d) drugs in general, you will probably cry and beg to swap or drop out completely because it's your worst nightmare
If you like these things but like a break every once in a while, you will probably struggle a lot more than you think
I've heard something about cockroach infestations, might need some backup on that one though...

Long post, and the irony of this all is that you probably won't get the accommodation you opt for anyway unless you're an unconditional, but maybe people will look back on this when they've been allocated in September and find it useful. Remember this is entirely my opinion and others living or who have lived here will almost certainly disagree in at least some cases so the best thing to do is really consider who you are as a person, and not be scared of living in less than pristine conditions.

And on one final note...if you actually want to live with someone with something in common with you...don't ask for a quiet house!
Reply 597
east slope is greatly exaggerated in terms of messiness and noise, i live there and wouldn't pick anywhere else. it depends on the flat you get sure, but from my experience everywhere else other than brighthelm is sterile.

Agree with most of this, especially this last bit. My advice for anyone without an unconditional offer is......do NOT have your heart set on getting one particular type of accommodation. Better to be pleasantly surprised and all that than really really disappointed.

Just a few corrections - Lewes Court ph 1, really not up any big hills....???.........whereas Norwich House (one of the Park Houses) most definitely is!! It was good to toboggan down I seem to remember :p:

Only other thing I'll add is that there always seems to be a huge amount of international students in both Norwich House and Stanmer Court. Don't think that would change anyones mind when choosing accomm, but it's just interesting!

I've gotta say, this has kinda terrified me :woo: Thanks for the post though.

Grr, I'm such a complicated person too. I'm a self-confessed snob, but I mean my family aren't very well off, and I am a very lazy, messy, negligent git sometimes (It's not something I aspire to though) and I do love to hardcore party, but not constantly.

Do people smoke in the flats? That would drive me crazy. So would the smell of weed.. I don't mind drugs, I just hate that smell. Hmm.

I'm sure it'll be a humbling experience nontheless :yep:
