practices are privately owned so i guess it depends who you are working for.

I agree with lucyrobyn, it would depend on who you worked for and whether you work with large or small animals or if you become a partner etc. I hope it's well paid though because I'm going to need a good income to pay off my student loans!lol!

I think I read somewhere once that the starting pay is around £28,000? But I'm not sure.

Friends who graduated in 2005 starting salaries ranged from £15,000-25,000, and some had added benefits such as a house (or housing allowance), a car, pension and health scheme etc. I think you would be very, very lucky to get £28K as your starting salary as a new graduate. It does depend on what type of work you are doing, small animal tends to pay more and have better hours than mixed or large animal. But once you join a partnership etc this can all change.

18.5-20k + house and car is my dream!

Join the army and it's 32,000 (this year). become a poultry specialist and its about 30,000 (2 years ago). having said that there are 24 army vets spread across the world and only 3 students from RVC in the last twenty years have gone on to become poultry specialists. so.....18-20,000 is your average starting wage!

Ok this is just depressing......tho coming from a military background I am very tempted by the army
Really?!! Wow - the Army does sound tempting!lol! Does the pay increase from 20k after you've been practising for a while? I hope so anyhoo because I want to come back to Cornwall to practise and the wages here are even lower!
Oh well, at least I'll be enjoying the job that i'll be doing!hehe!

i am interested in doing an internship and residency after i qualify, with the hope to work in a referral hospital. since we are on the topic what sort of salaries can you expect in these places?

it will increase with experience, my dad is a vet and is on around 60k a year although he has over 20 years experience and is a senior partner in an established practice.

Internships and residencies do not pay well, for example there is a residency currently advertised at the RVC and the pay is £14,900 but this is tax free. They usually offer very cheap accomodation as well with the jobs. As for once you have your added qualifications then yes it tends to add to your salary

I have a friend who is in a small animal practice in London, is 4 years qualified and works a 4 day week with 1 weekend in 4 on but no out of hours in the week. She is now on £34K a year, but not housing or car in with that.
