I didn't know we had one of these! I'm about to buy a new bike so opinions welcome:

I can go fast enough on the 16g pile of rust I'm currently using so it's not like I'm looking for high spec. Bikes get stolen a lot where I live. I'll be doing a couple of 2-3 mile routes a day, a few days a week. Really I just want something dependable and not awful to ride.

Cyclist flatmate is quite sure I have to get something around £600 for it to be worthwhile. At that point it's barely value for money compared to the bus. But I have been considering holding out for something ex-display or (dependable) second hand maybe pay around £400 for something worth more.

But really is there any good reason I shouldn't just get a £230 btwin from decathlon? The bike magazines seem to think they are the best of the cheap bikes and decent for what you pay. A mate has had one for four years with no problems.

My Btwin is 5 years old and still works perfectly, I got it for £180 (MTB not a hybrid) and have been really happy with it. It's comfy and reliable. I've replaced a few things to keep it running nicely but I've used it pretty heavily so would expect that on any bike. And I say that as someone who also owns a £1300 road bike (I know that's still fairly entry level for a road bike).

Hybrid. I'm somewhat open to the suggestion of a road bike but I've never been on one, my lower back is sensitive and hybrids will likely be more comfy. 90% of my cycling is going to be 2-3 miles, 2-4 times a days, a few days a week around the city. Now and again I might do further in one go. It'll mostly be roads but a few canal paths and similar.

Not really, I don't see why I'd need anything like that. My needs are mudguards and a bell and my likes are those handles with the extra bit to rest your hand on and maybe panniers. So not exactly fussy.

Carrera Parva is a good bet right now at £193 from halfords, as is a crossfire 2. OR if you spend a bit more you could get a Boardman MX Sport for £400. I don't spend much time looking at the secondhand market these days, but I'm sure you could get a specialised/Giant/Trek for that kinda money and in decent spec secondhand. Evans Cycles have a few decent looking ex demo/ex display bikes in that budget on their website, from Norco Trek and Specialised, depends what size you need though.

Budget £15-20 for mudguards £5-10 for bar ends, and £3 for a bell if you buy used and it doesn't already have one.

Thanks for the info

Size is the challenge for ex display and second hand- I'm 5ft4 so almost all are too big. And my bike has developed a gear change problem now so I'm less inclined to wait now

Halfords don't have the Prava in my size but do have the axle and the spec looks near identical to me. With a trade is it's cheaper than a btwin riverside. So that's a very tempting option

You'll be looking at a 16" frame then. How bad a gear problem?

Might be one or two stores that have it, may no longer be on the website though. The spec is identical, its just a different name and colour. Trade in ends on sunday by the way.

Yeah, which isn't the most common. There's a part of me that wants to wait for something decent to turn up on Evan's exdisplay in my size but I think it's past the point where that's sensible. I've been checking for a few weeks and not seen anything but a GT Nomad that they can't seem to shift.

The gears are annoying but not unrideable- it doesn't always manage to change when it's supposed to. I refuse to spend any money on getting it fixed though and I increasingly don't trust it not to fall apart.

I think tomorrow I'll go to Cycle Republic and see if they have one/something similar I can try since it's near. If I'm not sold I'll go out to Decathlon and maybe pop into Evan's since it's across the road.

I ended up with an axle. I recon I wouldn't notice much difference between it and the riverside so went with easier option. Though the muppet in cycle republic was trying to sell me an 18inch and then patronised me about how I'm meant to be up on my toes when they barely touched
Trying to pick a new pair of bib tights but having a bit of difficulty so if anyone has any recommendations I'd appreciate it. I figure about 4-15C rating is probably about right. Water and wind resistance probably wouldn't go amiss. Probably looking to spend £80-100. Brand recommendation would be awesome. I have a fair few bits of castelli kit(including some bib shorts) which I really like(especially the padding). I own some dhb bib tights from around 4 years ago that I don't like tons. Though I gather dhb has made strides in the past year or two. I was looking at some Santini bib tights but reviews suggest that might not be such a good idea. Perhaps some Castelli Meno 2. It's difficult. As I say, any recommendations?
Castelli Nanoflex tights. Above freezing I pick them every time in the winter.

Why's that? The water resistance? Do you find it keeps you warm enough? I'll probably ride out as low as 4C
Warm and a nice pad. The water resistance thing is alright initially but I can never be arsed to maintain it. I rode below zero in them last year and was fine, didn't make a regular habit of it as I've got warmer tights but while they were dirty the Nanoflex were ok. 4/5 degrees should be fine but it depends how you feel the cold. If you really notice it then the Sorpasso Wind are ridiculously warm and have a very nice pad, but they're also noticeably more restrictive than the Nanoflex when you're pedalling.

I think I've owned this bike

A Cannonade without a Lefty is wrong, wrong in so many ways.
Currently sat on a plane post Tour of the Reservoir heading back to Bristol. I wasn't racing but doing motocam work for Eurosport. Very tough race. Yesterday we had periodic sleet and snow downpours which is never fun!

Women's racing is getting pretty damn good these days. The field this weekend was head and shoulders above the field from last year. Very competitive.
So....

Anyone turboing over winter? I got a non-smart one recently and I'm touring the free trials, any recommendations?
Came across this thread, have to say Orro bikes do sweet carbon road bikes. Their newer models are pricey, but i got the cheaper terra gravel from a local retailer, defo worth the money.

any of you ride Orro?
