could someone please add me to a soton med 2017 facebook and or whatsapp group

Search on fb for southampton medicine offers 2017
If anyone is looking for alternative accommodation we have two rooms available in a 4 room house ideally situated in between the hospital and the campus. The two of us here are mature med students going into second year. The rooms are nice and fully furnished. Kitchen and bathroom were new when we moved in one year ago. We really want to keep this a medical house as it worked really well last year (the two moving out were also med students, one is getting married in two weeks and moving in with her new husband and the other is moving into her spare room...we were good housemates!), we both love it here and think others could too! It's £350 a month plus bills and the contract starts 5th September. PM me for details.

For anyone already studying at Soton, would you recommend using a bike to get around. How accessible are the lecture/hospital where you're based for storing your bike?

Southampton is great for cyclists; would definitely recommend. I'm 80% sure all halls of residence have a secure bike shed that you can access by your student ID once you've registered (£10 at the Unilink office, last time I did it). As for hospital, if you want to use the secure garage, you'll have to pay another £15 because it's owned by the hospital, but there are plenty of bike racks just outside the academic block. If you're living in halls, you'll also have a free bus pass for the year anyway so it's not too detrimental if you don't bring a bike in first year.

My only practical advice is to bring a really good lock and don't bring a bike that looks *too* nice. As mentioned previously, bike theft is endemic especially in student areas, even at the hospital.

My place has been confirmed but my accomadation hasn't, is this normal?

I'd say that's normal. Move-in starts pretty late compared to most universities; if I remember correctly, I got my accommodation early September.
Anyone know where i can buy the parking permits? Staying at Glen Eyre
I have seen all the different medical societies and they are quite overwhelming. Do people know where they want to specialise before they start?
Or are these societies and conferences available to anybody to see which they may be more interested in?
Hi all
I need some advise please
Stats:13A* at gcse. Predicted 3 A* at A levels. Ukcat 740,
Am I correct in saying that ukcat will be used for the first time this year post interview to rank applicants when making offers? Would someone be able to confirm please?
Thank you in advance 😊

Definitely the latter. Specialty societies really aren't that big a commitment, so sign up to however many pique your interest; they'll give you opportunities to get to know more about certain careers that you might not glean from in lectures.

Bunfight is on the 28th at Highfield Campus.

Thank you, that's really helpful. I know a lot of people say don't try and prepare for medicine but do you know what we will cover initially in anatomy so I can do some background reading?
I have been out of education so feel this would be beneficial for myself.

I was out of education for a long time. You get a reasonably controlled entry into things, including anatomy. Even in something such as medicine there are different terms and phrases for the same thing, pre-reading is as likely to screw you over as help you. You will be here and starting in no time...best advice I can give is enjoy your time off!

What Alan said.

And I had been in the out of education when I started, as well. To be honest, the material that I would have wanted to read ahead for is just best learned from a lecturer in a lecture and then revised in your time. Really, any preparation work you do might try to do at this stage is of little value or advantage, which is what everyone said to me; I was sceptical about that until I actually started the course, but you'll see what I mean eventually.

The anatomy for the first semester is pretty basic, anyway. The way they set anatomy as a subject is that learning it during FoM (semester 1) sets you up for the pace and volume of material that you'll be learning for the subsequent semesters.

But if you're really just bored and wanting something to pass the time for the next few weeks, I'd recommend just learning the names of bones for a start? That's always fun.

Well for graduates applying to BM5 the lowest score was 2770 so I am going to go ahead and assume it was out of 3600 otherwise that was just mean!

I can't remember off the top of my head but it is mentioned in this thread a few times at the start somewhere. Sorry!

Hi nice results there, any medical school is good in my opinion as it is hard to get into med school in first place. You can go to GMC website to find full list of medical schools and then separately search the entry requirements for each school.

The entry requirements do vary from year to year so please double check on the official websites of the different unis.

(ps ums is not too important unless you are applying for oxbridge:smile: )
