What the hell is a Eddie Izzard?

I know he's an amusing and fantastic fundraiser, but the hell is he doing in politics.

Also, I'm not really sure why he crossdresses - is it just a persona?

I saw his antics on Question Time the other day and how rude is he? Cutting through people in the audience and on the panel... what a dunce.
