Internet policy at Brunel - limited access

hi

I start a postgraduate course at Brunel University (Uxbridge/West London) in September 07.
I applied for on campus accommodation.
What does limited Internet access in the rooms mean?
Can I serve through the WWW without any restrictions? (Skype, E-mail, YouTube, myspace, forums)
I don't need porn or p2p, but the whole rest of the WWW.
What is your experience?
I really need access 24/7 to the whole net.
Otherwise I need to find off campus accommodation asap.

Thanx for every info.

I think you mean UNlimited access?

I have never heard that Brunel offers limited access. That would be stupid. What do they do, cut off the network connection at midnight?

sounds good principle.
That means there are no restrictions in privat student rooms/halls (apart from p2p or porn sites)?

This thread needs to be moved to the Brunel forum.

Having looked at the info in that link, I am actually appalled to learn that you may be right, madivory. From the looks of those notes, it seems that we will not be able to use the Internet for pleasure or for using social networking sites.

And what's all that rubbish about having 'minimum requirements' in terms of anti-virus software? Talk about Stalinesque. :s-smilie:

do you know how to move this thread to the brunel forum. can't find it.:frown:
but i think it's really important to know.
(hopefully/maybe the connect/resnet (kind of intranet) is independent from the internet access in the student rooms.)

There are ways around it, but it could probably get you in a lot of trouble :s-smilie:

Urgent:

I need to ask again:
What is the current situation at Brunel in student rooms in halls on campus accommodation towards (limited) Internet access?

Is it possible to access all international sites via port 80 (apart from porn)
that means e.g. international Online Banking, international unis, news-sites, forums.

What about email-ports for my private email-account via outlook (express)
What about FTP
What about Skype (conferences/chats), YouTube, myspace
What about general Download/Upload Speed
What about Internet TV / TV/News-Streams from overseas
I guess p2p (Emule) doesn't work, that's ok
What means monitoring through stuff of Brunel Computer Support
Will all my (private) traffic, conversations, private emails, downloads... be monitored?

To work at Brunel professionally I need the full Internet, otherwise I can't stay on campus, unfortunately.

Thanx for help

Why are you asking here? Phone the IT department.

umm well I just asked my brother who has been at Brunel for two years and he said that during his first year at halls he had unlimited internet access. You know that we submit essays via internet to our tutors we don't hand them in in class  ya just thought i'd get that bit of info in there !!! hehe

hi spadez

I already contacted the IT department via email. But no concrete answer yet, which made me suspicious of them. I only got this link
http://www.brunel.ac.uk/life/study/computing/cc/service/connection

with the comment "I hope this helps." Apparently it doesn't.
That's why I came to this forum.

I will phone them on Monday to get final clarification.

hey ! he said certain sites have been blocked like downloading music on limewire and porn etc. He said some of the male students were not happy that they wern't able to view porn because they were over 18 hahahaha. thats probably whats mean't by limited internet access. you can use the internet any time 24/7. The 2nd year if you live off campus (which is usually what happens) you'll have to pay for your own internet access if you reapply to live in halls you'll get the "limited" internet access for free again.

Read through this..

Should help a bit, if not there is a guy from the internet team who works at Brunel answering questions, so he should be able to help you out with any questions you may have
