'Our collective shame': Trudeau delivers historic apology to LGBT Canadians

I wonder what apologies future politicians will make for our behaviour today.

Islamophobia, transphobia, etc. come to mind. Imagine how horrified future generations will be to learn that we used to force transwomen to cut off their penises before we accepted them as women. Or that we used to keep animals in cruel farms simply to breed and butcher them for meat.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau delivered a historic apology to LGBT Canadians in the House of Commons today, saying sorry for decades of "state-sponsored, systematic oppression and rejection."

Speaking to a packed and emotional chamber, Trudeau expressed shame, sorrow and deep regret to the civil servants, military members and criminalized Canadians who endured discrimination and injustice based on their sexual orientation.

"You are professionals. You are patriots. And above all, you are innocent. And for all your suffering, you deserve justice, and you deserve peace," he said. "It is our collective shame that you were so mistreated. And it is our collective shame that this apology took so long – many who suffered are no longer alive to hear these words. And for that, we are truly sorry." MPs rose together in applause to the apology, which at times brought Trudeau to tears.

The apology comes with $145 million, which includes $110 million for compensation for LGBT civil servants whose careers were sidelined or ended because of their sexuality, and $15 million for historical reconciliation, education and memorialization efforts.

A great gesture to the LGBT community.

Trudeau is a shell of a person, as much as a populist as Trump and about as vacuous. In an alternate timeline he'd be advocating for Nazism because it's the fashionable new social movement - he has no principles or opinions beyond soundbites and platitudes for whoever is in the spotlight at that moment.

I seriously doubt he's means tested who was sidelined and what that's worth or who actually had their career ended due to their sexuality - he's just giving out enough money to secure progressive votes. Literally buying voters by a generic 'gay grant'. I have no problem with ensuring genuine equality but everything he does is like a child who has had a concept explained but only understands it superficially - 'in the old days people were sidelined because of their sexuality in jobs? So, they got paid less? That means money is important, lets give them a grant' whilst the adult is standing there 'No, Justin, it's an important lesson about equality not just in law but in society - not a way to score points. Giving them a few quid won't fix anything'. To which they get a blank eyed stare and 'But they were paid less'.

He is seriously a plastic person - just goes with the tide and does whatever's trendy because it looks good.

Processing billions of animals through a cruel and pointless life, breeding them to be fatter and tastier, simply because we find vegetables too boring.
Keeping out millions of child refugees who flee a war that we started, just because their skin is the wrong colour.
Forcing trans-women to cut off their penises before we recognise that they are women.
Not hiring people just because they aren't white males.
Caring more when a celebrity has divorced than when hundreds of people in a non-white country are killed.
Not condemning Israel's apartheid, imperialism and racism for fear of being called racist.
Condemning an entire religion for the actions of a tiny minority who have killed hundreds, yet not condemning Atheism for spawning leaders who killed tens of millions.
Making money by outsourcing labour to coal-fueled sweatshops in China, while patting yourself on the back for your own lower CO2 emissions and human rights.
