Yeah, undergraduate, just at a mature student college. I should think we will, I was told the teaching is done in the faculty not college (hardly surprising given there's so few students), and I can't imagine there are many for each language. I think I remember seeing that the total for AMES last year was around 40?

I discussed Soseki in my interview too (can't recite though!). I love early to mid 20th century Japanese literature <3

Yes, I was talking to someone who was first year Japanese last year, and he said that they started with 10 students, then 4 dropped out.
Then he was sent down.
So.. it's small. And we have history with the Chinese students too I think!

I like contemporary literature; we talked about how it relates to some of the stuff we've been doing in philosphy.
But there's nothing to compare it to unless you read much earlier things and I like Soseki~

Seriously? Is that down to the intensity of the language learning then? That's pretty surprising. I'm prepared though, and very, very motivated. The conditions for my offer are actually really good, in that if I don't meet them, then I'd be unable to cope with the course anyhow. No need for ifs though, of course

Yeah, I was talking with someone who did Chinese a few years ago, and she said they started with 12 and ended up with 8. But hey - we share history lectures, woo! Haha. Just imagine how cosy and friendly the faculty is compared to, say, the Law faculty. Everyone will know each other

It'll just be exclusive

So... "Cambridge AMES 2010" or something?
Yes, that sounds good~
Can we be, like, officers? (No idea of the terminology ^_^)

We need a photo though. I couldn't find one of the AMES building... so I uploaded a map of Asia :s-smilie:

Someone needs to think of something more Cambridgey though.

Joined! I feel special now.

Hmmm, well the faculty looks pretty grim from the outside, so probably not that. How about a snowflake? Haha. I had to make one before my interview along with everyone else (the receptionist told us to, lovely woman) - did you guys have to make one too?

Yes, I had to make one too! Out of shiny silver paper, and she said she wanted to stick them on the window. We were all really nervous and had forgotten how to do it... =*(

I think everyone would get it ^_^
As much as I would love to join you on the group, I'm currently swimming in a certain Cambridge pool.

Love the snowflake though; I'm glad I got to make one
And congratulations on all your offers!

Good luck! The group looks a little pathetic at the moment, so you NEED to get in. Which college had you applied to?
I was pooled by Christ's but got an offer this morning from Homerton :woo:

This year I got rejected by St Cat's to do AMES. I felt pretty gutted as you can imagine. I also felt it was a really unfair interview, when i walked out of it i knew i hadn't got it. I didn't even get pooled which really got to me aswell -

GCSE's - 2 A*'s 6 A's 2 B's bearing in mind I was seriously ill in hospital.

AS Levels - French 99%, German 90%, Economics 92% and History 80% (one paper i got 100% and the other i got 54%, just re-took)...

Predicted 3 A*'s

Should i bother to re-apply to the course or should i go to SOAS/Edinburgh/Manchester/Leeds?

Cheers

If you can get 3 A*s and can think of something worthwhile to do in your gap year I don't see why not, especially if you felt you could have shown your ability more but your interview went badly. You're clearly academically capable so it's up to you really, good luck :-).

First of all, let's have the usual Oxbridge is not the be-all and end-all, but I understand your point. You have good grades, however, it's not the only thing Cambridge is looking for in their students. They want students they think would benefit greatly from their style of teaching, and even if you're a bright student, it doesn't mean you would do very well there.

Now if it was your dream in life and your main ambition, then why not, but make sure your application is a lot stronger than it was this year (even if this year application was), that you won't repeat your mistakes during the interview process, that you're able to show them how passionate you are about your subject and demonstrate a great will to learn from them.

However, it is a very pretty university, and I still think studying there would be like a dream, but I also believe I spent enough time there as a non-student to realise that I prefer where I am at the moment. The university is prestigious, it's great fun, it looks amazing, etc. but you may have an equally good (if not better) experience at another university.

Before making a final decision, please, do consider your other options and go for the university that offers what you think would be the best course for you. Maybe you prefer to specialise in an area that Cambridge doesn't offer, or you prefer the structure of the degree elsewhere? Maybe you would have a better chance to be involved at uni elsewhere, etc.

You can also spend a year at another university and re-apply the year after to Cambridge if you really don't like where you are and think Cam would be better. I know how difficult it is to get over a rejection from Cambridge, and it will probably take you time before you realise your other options are equally good. However, trying once again won't hurt you, if that's what you really want

Only if you want to virtually guarantee another rejection. Cambridge, as a rule, don't take students who are already enrolled in courses at other universities.

Never heard of that rule before…
