Mark Cavendish. What a guy. Was there ever any doubt, even as the odds of his train falling apart remain disconcertingly high?

Viviani looked mightily pissed.

How much did you guys spend on your bike helmets and what did you think of them? Thinking of taking advantage of this sale at Halfords but unsure what's a reasonable budget yet. Considering something that costs as much as a MET Terra.

I don't subscribe to the view that paying more for a helmet results in increased safety directly. A lid that meets the safety standards and fits your head (essential, otherwise you're just wearing a fancy hat) properly will do the job. More expensive helmets allow more fine tuning in fit, but beyond that, increasing the price just seems to lead to better ventilation and lighter weights.

I have a £30 lid from Specialized. It isn't as airy or sleek looking as one that costs twice as much, but it fits me well and I'm confident that it will do the job if my next off involves my noggin on the tarmac.

That looks like a nice one, though. Do you ride road or off-road? Because you may not want the visor for road riding.

I actually fell asleep during the stage. I was a lot more tired after this morning's ride than I thought I was! It was never in doubt when I saw Cav was in that front group after the crash, up until that point it's really dodgy, especially on the first day of the first grand tour. Everyone thinks they can nip a win.

Viviani's reaction was almost comical. Cav, whether he wins or not, is easily the best sprinter still. No proper lead out, had to close a gap by himself and went very wide and still won. Masterclass.

Look where you are GOING to go not where you ARE at
If you look ahead in the distance a bit you will find that you will probably go where you want and in a straight direction without too much thinking snd you will see hazards coming (like driving if you can)

thanks ill try this out next time i ride my bike

Its a shame too because my bike is actually quite cool yet its just gathering dust in my bedroom lol

Just going to go ahead and say to ignore McHumpy92 from now. Clearly trolling so no need to feed him. He'll get bored eventually.
Padded shorts work excellently, thanks for the help.
I need a new bike though, my dad's has the gears on the top tube and earlier I actually fell off as I changed gear. (took right hand off handlebar, changed gear, as I did this I veered to the left and hit a grass bank and ended up sprawled on the floor) Thank god no one saw.

My mum's bike has that too - looks like the least easy way to change gear!

And my Dad's too but he seems to like it, or at least it did. I can't remember. Reminds me of a story my Dad tells. He was a kid and a friend of his brother's offered to buy a wheel off of his bike and my Dad had thought to himself if he sold that wheel he could use the money to do something else to the bike. Luckily he realised before it was too late that if he sold the wheel and got this part he had been wanting he wouldn't be able to ride the bike because, well, he wouldn't have two wheels.

I don't really see the need for expensive lids, they all have to meet safety requirements or else they wouldn't be able to sell them. Unless there's a reason for wanting a particularly light or aero one then just buy one that you like the look of. The one you linked to certainly looks nice though!

I getya, I honestly do and I do tend to agree in terms of safety. On the other hand, I can be a really fussy git and the slightest thing can make me grumpy and two things I liked about this helmet is it felt almost like a pleasure to wear, not too uncomfortable and it also looked good in comparison to its cheaper alternatives which I found largely ugly. That said it will only cost £45. I'm not paying full price. So, no, it's not £30 but it's not an absolute fortune either. It's not too far off of that price in the grand scheme of things.

Well I'd go for it then, it's good looking and not a bad price. Enjoy!

In the past 24 hours I have learned:
If you are falling right and leave your right foot clipped in:

Firstly it hurts

secondly you feel really stupid

thirdly your brother and father will have very little sympathy (in all honesty it was funny)

It's not much use unclipping when you are sprawled on the floor

and also that I was tempting fate when I said i hadn't had to put my helmet to the test before (yay not broken)

I doubt it'll be the last time either, you do get the hang of it in the end!

Surprised at Garmin today. Had many great TT specialists and finished way down. Awful result for them.

Team Sky to be fair were in my opinion always likely to take top with Garmin. First class result and gives Wiggo the advantage going into the mountains tomorrow. Cav did an awesome job yesterday as well. Even Eisel was fuming at Nacer Bouhanni (Twitter account).

Apart from that i have put my small money where my mouth is; £5 on top 3 finish for Pozzovivo in GC at 22/1 and £5 for Pozzovivo at 16/1 for KOM. I think that represents good value!
Does anyone know somewhere I can stream the giro online? We're getting sky in our flat but it's not being installed until the 14th and thats a whole week away :frown:

Is it going to be a sprinter, an escapee or a puncheur?
Cat 3 finish 20km before the end and a cat 2 mid-way through the race.

There is no Sagan, Gilbert, Boonen or my money would be on them.
All the sprinters look weak on any climb apart from Degenkolb. I'm going to go for Sanchez. Nibali will bide his time

In the end I got this one - MET Veleno. Glad I spent a little more time looking around now. I love a good bargain.

I meant to get back to you earlier, Fission_Mailed, but I got distracted. I'm road riding atm but the visor is removable in both of those cases so isn't a problem. Not adjustable but I doubt you could do better for that price. As you may have seen in my earlier reply to SamHedges I agree with your point but £45 is not too expensive, certainly not too much money in my opinion compared to more expensive helmets, especially for one that normally costs so much more. It could be worse. Not to mention I found it a lot more visually pleasing and a much more comfortable fitting to others closer to £30 I tried on when I popped to Halfords.

I agree that £45 isn't exactly expensive (in road cycling terms, it's practically pocket change. Have you ever seen a pair of Assos bibs? :ahee: ), especially if you really like it. When it is time to replace my current lid I'm almost certainly going to spend more money, just probably not this much more.

I don't know whether its because I haven't got used to using gears, but I swear going for a 4mile cycle hurts more than a leg session at the gym. I would've thought squatting strength would carry over into cycling.
