Hi! Unfortunately you can’t really choose what shifts you get. You usually are stuck with the shifts, you have gotten. The managers want employees in at special times and you would usually work 4 hours per day when you are new (no breaks) or 5 - 7 hour shift per day when they really need to staff. However, after your probation period. You could Shift Swap with another employee though! You could probably request it by speaking to a manager.

I wouldn’t mind that at all that would be perfect.
@kazzy121 you can ask for help here if your under paid other employees can help you here.
Hey,

If a job came up a Retail Assistant part time doesn't specify weekend but in the job description if it states ''Whether it’s a part time role, full time or weekend'' is there a good chance of getting a job during the weekend.
Timeline for Vacancies at my local store:

July 2019: Retail Assistant
September 2019: 3 retail assistant (1 night shift, 2 day shift between 15:00-19:00)
October 2019: Sales Assistant - Christams Temp.

When do you guys see the store advertising for vacancies

Hope it’s closer towards February or at least they advertise during February. I hope that store the staff don’t want to stay so they advertise in January but oh well I will stay patiently. Xmas temps finish on 9th of January as well.
What type of employee are you at Primark: Goes to everyone

- Part Time
- Night Shift
- Full Time
- Weekend
Hello People,

What did your store do during Christmas Eve or to the run up towards Christmas. E.g. Christmas Party, Christmas hats, Christmas jumpers, Christmas dinner (I know Sainsbury’s do that).

SCENARIO 4:

You have been assigned to work on the shop floor where you need to ensure clothes are neatly displayed and customers' queries and answered. A manager approaches you and asks you if you can help out at the tills because this area is extremely busy and the queues are longer than normal. Your area is relatively tidy and not too busy at the moment. What would you do?

Choose the BEST and the WORST response.

A) Say that you can't leave the shop floor since it might become very busy.
B) Say that you can't make any decisions before having spoken to your own manager who has just gone on a break. You will ask them once they return.
C) Agree to help out at the tills at the period of time in order to make sure the queues are reduced and customers don't take long.
D) Suggest to the manager they find a colleague from another department to support.
SCENARIO 5:

You are rostered to work on the tills at 10am and you can see it is already very busy with queues building up. On your way over a customer stops you to say they have found a duvet cover that they really like but can't find it in the size they want. There might be more in the stock room. What would you do?

Choose the BEST and the WORST response.

A) Have a quick look through the shelf in case the customer missed it and if you can't find one, show them what else is available in that size.
B) Invite the customer over to the tills where you can get someone to check the stock and have the duvet cover brought out to them if it is available.
C) Ask the customer to wait until another Retail Assistant becomes available.
D) Ask a team member from that department if they can help the customer find what they are looking for and continue making your way to the tills.
SCENARIO 6:

It's peak time in the store and you are working on the till. There is a long queue of customers waiting to be served. Even though you are working very fast, customers are starting to complain about the wait time. Unfortunately the customer you are serving cannot find their payment card; they have been searching throughout their pockets and bag for the last few minutes. This is causing customers in the queue to become more agitated. What would you do?

Choose the BEST and the WORST response.

A) Reassure the customer it's okay. Smile to the people in the queue and apologise for the delay, assuring them you will be with them shortly.
B) Ask the customer to double-check their pockets, reassuring them that this type of thing happens all the time.
C) Tell the customer that there's a long queue and you need to serve the next customer. You nod to the next customer asking them to come forward.
D) Ask the customer to step aside while they search for it and ask the next person in the queue to come forward.
SCENARIO 7:

A customer has been browsing in your section and is looking increasingly dissatisfied and frustrated. They approach you and ask if you have a particular style of jeans in their size. You check the stock room and see that the product is currently 'out of stock'. What would you do?

Choose the BEST and the WORST response.

A) Apologise and tell the customer the jeans are unavailable and suggest another retailer that sells similar products.
B) Check if the jeans are due to be delivered soon and the customer can be contacted when they arrive.
C) Give the customer the details for the jeans so that they can find it at another Primark store.
D) Suggest to the customer that they go to another Primark store to find their size.

SCENARIO 1:

You are working on a Friday afternoon on the shop floor and your shift is almost over. Your manager approaches you and asks if you could stay later to help out in another department as they are incredibly busy. You have had a long week and were looking forward to a free evening. What do you do?

Choose the BEST and the WORST response.

A) Tell your manager that you will stay longer if necessary but make sure that they know you are incredibly tired and won't be able to work as quickly as usual.
B) Apologise to your manager and say that you would like to help but that you are busy this evening and can't stay longer, however you assure them you will be happy to help out another time.
C) Agree to stay and help out since you know that an additional pair of hands will speed up the work and other colleagues have helped you out before.
D) Agree to help but insist that you can only stay for a while since you have committed to plans that you cannot cancel.

Done this question so here's my opinion:

1 - It is good that you would be staying for longer but it doesn't show that as a retail assistant you are faced pace and it shows to your manager you really wouldn't want to be there for the extra hours.

2 - Shows no flexiblity whatsoever, shows that you aren't reliable and it definitely shows that you cannot be asked for extra hours and shows in future you would repeat this.

3 - Without a doubt the best answer you would give shows flexiblity, reliablity and keen on working as others have helped before and now its your turn to help other colleagues.

4 - It is very similar to number 1 and 2 you agree to help but you want to spend the evening somewhere else you do show flexiblity but it shows that you don't really want to spend more time at work.

So my opinions are:

BEST: 3
WORST: 2
What skills are shown in the scenario:

SCENARIO 1: Flexibility + Reliability
SCENARIO 2: Payments + customer service
SCENARIO 3: Teamwork
SCENARIO 4: Tills to reduce the time taken to reduce the queues
SCENARIO 5: Customer service
SCENARIO 6: Payments + Queues + Customer Satisfaction
SCENARIO 7: Out of stock product what to do next
SCENARIO 8: Teamwork + completing the task
