Uni of Bath accommodation - Should I choose Quiet // alcohol free

Hi, I'm currently applying for accommodation at the University of Bath, and I really don't know if I should go for Quiet accommodation and/or Alcohol free accommodation or just standard. I'm stuck in this dilemma because:- I basically never drink, because I don't really feel the appeal of alcohol and I have plenty of fun partying without it. I'm thinking that maybe standard accommodation flatmates who drink will mean I will be a bit excluded. (from experience)- Also drinkers tend to be quite rowdy which means less sleep? - I also want to keep up healthy sleep habits that are reasonable whilst I'm at uni (probably looking at like 11 - 11:30 sleep and 7 - 7:30 wake up) and I want to know that when I dO go out (which isn't that infrequent - I'm quite a social person!) I don't have to worry that it'll be too noisy to sleep back at my accommodation.- I also worry that I won't meet people like me or enough varied people e.g. who like to party but also love a good gaming or reading sesh or staying in. or e.g. who are also social and outgoing, but just want to make sure their accommodation is a chill place when they need to relax.- Is quiet accommodation too strict? (in terms of visitors, or just stuff I do in my free time on my own)I know its a lot of things, but if someone who knows about or has experienced either side of the accommodation, pls let me know your thoughts or what you think I should do. <3
Doesn’t really matter if it’s quiet or not, you’re going to get loud mouthed and careless drunks often. Even if they’re not your flat mates.

Hi there,

I am a current Bath student, and I had some accommodation issues similar to you in first year, so hopefully I can help

If you don't really drink, but still like to go out and party and socialise, I would suggest opting for standard accommodation. Quiet accommodation tends to be, based on what I've been told, a bit boring. In my experience, standard accommodation is where you will meet the more varied people. You'll also meet lot more people with similar interests via societies (i.e. you said you like gaming, and we have a gaming society).

Most people end up really loving their flatmates, and if people are being too noisy (which is rare) you can just talk to them directly or talk to the accommodation team. I don't know anyone who had issues with their flatmates being too noisy or disruptive, and if they did they resolved the issue quickly and it was all fine. I personally didn't like my first flatmates as their were (unfortunately) the rare bunch that were too noisy and inconsiderate, so I just contacted the accommodation team and I moved to a different flat in the same accommodation. My new flatmates were lovely, and really respectful - we'd chill and watch Netflix, play video games, go out etc, so it is definitely varied.

Based on my experience as a Freshers Week captain for quiet and single gender accommodation, and based on what students who lived there told me, it is a bit boring as it's mostly people who have absolutely much less interest in more social stuff, and tend to just want to be on their own in their rooms. In standard accommodation, you may be unlucky (like me, which is very rare - I only know 1 person who had the same issue), in which case you can easily move to a different flat. In general, standard accommodation is a lot more varied and social, and if people are disruptive, you can just address the problem. I'd say go for standard, as you'll likely meet people similar to yourself - not everyone is super into drinking, so I'm sure you'd have a good time

The issue with noise usually tends to be due to rowdy people outside, or in other flats, in which case you can just call security and they'll sort it out. It is anonymous, so security won't grass you up to whoever is making noise. In my first year flat we had a flat above us who were always really loud, would ring all the doorbells at 5am, and set off the fire alarms. Mine and other flats called security and it was sorted immediately.

I hope this helped,
Jessica, a third year NatSci student
I was in the exact same situation when I applied - same uni/approach to nights out/general preference for stuff to do in accommodation, and I've put down my preference as quiet for this year. Not 100% sure how it's going to work out or where I'll end up, but I'm hopeful!

All I can say about the rules is that as far as I know, visitors are fine unless you're actually being loud past 10pm. I know that's not really much help now, though.

What did you end up choosing in the end?

Can I ask how did you find quiet accommodation in the end?
