Biomed or Radiography-help I can't decide!
So I am going into my first year after a foundation year at Portsmouth Uni and I am having trouble deciding between radiography or Biomed. I have already had an interview for radiography but I would like to know out of these two degrees which one has better career prospects/earning potential. Any opinions of either of the two courses from someone who's studied at Ports would be greatly appreciated

Hey @IGCSEgirlsI currently study pharmacy at Portsmouth and in first year I shared a few modules with Biomedical science. Biomed is more lecture and information based with labs compared to radiography (I have a friend who does this). If you do Biomed you are more likely to be working in a lab processing results etc.
With radiography you spend a lot of time on placement putting your learning into practice.
If you do radiography you can become a radiographer and work in a hospital after graduation.

I’m a second year radiography student and I just want to ask you to make sure you’re sure if you want to choose radiography. Currently I’m not enjoying it and the work (both university and placement) is very difficult but you are very likely to get a job by the end of it! However I’m not too sure about biomedical sciences
The majority of diagnostic radiographers secure a job easily as soon as they qualify because they're in demand at the moment. They start on NHS band 5 pay but there's apparently a lot of room to specialise and move to band 6 fairly quickly.
But you need to take into account what you think you'd enjoy doing for the next 10 years. I'm going into Diagnostic Radiography at Portsmouth in September, after spending the last 5 years in office jobs - I've hated being stuck behind a computer all day 5 days a week!
Do you know what you'd want to do with a biomed degree? If you do, dissect the day-to-day of that role and compare with the day-to-day of a Radiographer to try to work out what you'd enjoy doing for the next 10 years. Sometimes it's easier to work out what you wouldn't like to do rather than would like to do.
But you need to take into account what you think you'd enjoy doing for the next 10 years. I'm going into Diagnostic Radiography at Portsmouth in September, after spending the last 5 years in office jobs - I've hated being stuck behind a computer all day 5 days a week!

What is the timetable like ? I’ve just been offered a place for diagnostic radiography but now I’m panicking if I can handle uni and 3 kids ! Are you in uni or placement literally 9-5 mon - fri ?
Do you want to work in radiography or biomed? Research the careers they lead into and decide what you'd rather, but don't choose what the rest of your working life may be like based on which course you think will be the easiest or will fit your schedule best for the next 3 years.
Radiography will involve placements, check with the uni for where these will be. I'm going into radiography this year and have been told placements will follow hospital shifts and can be a range of times like night shifts, early mornings etc.

omg i want to do DR in 2022!! is it that bad??
DR under recruits at undergraduate compared to the actual number of DR vacancies and it’s never going to be a saturated market. Biomedical science is more of a free market degree, so to speak, with no restrictions on the number of people recruited to the degree so the competition for jobs is potentially slightly higher, especially for the NHS roles. However, there’s probably higher earning potential overall.
@m1205 one person’s experience is not an objective representation of the whole degree. There are always going to be people on any course who find it doesn’t live up to expectations. There were plenty on mine (speech and language therapy). Whenever you’re going on to study something - particularly a vocational degree - that you haven’t studied at A level, you’re gambling a bit more than usual. But if you’ve researched it thoroughly, tried to get some work experience, enjoy working with people, don’t mind machines breaking or speech and language therapists taking over the limited space in the viewing area (VF clinics can be a squeeze), enjoy physics and think x-rays are the best thing ever, you’ll probably enjoy it.

I have people in my cohort who have children and are doing okay juggling the work, as for placement. In my hospital site, we’re in Monday-Thursday 9-5. I reckon you’ll be okay doing it, all you need is some good time management skills and you should be good to go! My advice is with assignments, start early so you can finish them earlier and designate time for everything. Time for work, time for your family, time for assignments, time to have fun. You’ll be okay

It’s not terrible! I just realised that it wasn’t for me really. It’s really just personal preference, please don’t panic. If you really want to do it, and you want to go into healthcare, you’ll be okay!

I know it's been 2 years since you've made this post but I wanted to ask: how are you finding radiography now that you're probably doing it? Do you regret picking it ? If you could go back in time would you still pick the same course or something else? I've starting radiography this year and I'm in my first term but I don't know if I made a mistake by picking radiography (last minute choice) over biomed (my dream for a while)
